I have three knife grinders, a home built 2x72 basically copied from the NWG, a 1x30 that gets a workout and I just built a funky disc grinder using an old stone grinder.

This is my Dozier grinder,The air actuated belt tensioner is pure genius!Built like a tank.2 HP DC motor w/ VFD & Direct drive.Very quiet machine.Pedestal mounted allows a small footprint where space is a concern.
If You can afford the best get a Dozier,Great investment IMO.:D

Someday I will have a real grinder... but this little puppy is keeping me going in the meantime. It's held up surprisingly well.

My humble 2x42 Craftsman. I removed the side guards for NASCAR-style fast pit stops and cut away part of the upper guard so I can use the idler as a contact wheel for hogging. The work rest got taken off cuz it was in my way, and I lost it so long ago I no longer miss it LOL. It REALLY needs a ceramic platen liner from USA.... but it does work. I've made a heckuva lotta sparks with this thing and it only cost me about $100.

If you are going to make a knife with that piece of what looks to be round stock, the file is setting on:eek:,I would recommend,at least a box of 14'' Flat Bastards to get you started.:D:D
Nicholson,would be the best,but I don't think it really matters:D
Good luck.

God bless,Keith

Actually Keith, that's my window sill mounted knife vise! If that was what I was starting with, I would have quit before I started!!!:D:D:D

I built a two wheel 2x72 to replace the 1/3hp Craftsman 2x42. Now I can use those legendary Blaze belts:)

The frame is 3/4" Douglas fir plywood, laminated together with Gorilla glue and wood screws. The 10" contact wheel is from Grizzly, most of the other parts are from Knifemaker USA. The 1hp, 1725rpm motor is from Pricess Auto. I have 3-stack pulleys but will only run it two speeds - 2250fmp, and 4500fpm, the fastest speed of 9000fpm might be a bit scarey and hard on bearings.

Bruce, that is so cool!!! Does it seem as solid as if it would be if made from steel? Did it come out to be significantly cheaper, because of the cost of wood as opposed to steel?

Welcome, by the way!!! You should go introduce yourself in the Intro section, I'm sure your experience will be a welcome addition to this forum!

It's so cool!!!2thumbs2thumbs2thumbs

Here's my EERF, with small gussets I fab'd to strengthen the upright since my motor was face-mount only. I also made a little bracket to facilitate an eye-bolt adjustment for the tension spring. I used eye bolts for the clamping knobs also, saved a buck everywhere I could.
The short shaft on my motor made it necessary to mount the small wheel fixture in the work rest slot in order to get things aligned properly. I only have the SWA for now, I am hoping to get wheels for my platen assembly soon.
