Yea, I am trying something different. I am tired of dealing with all of the little scratches on the blade after working the handle. Plan is to get the bulk out of the way, clean up the knife, and then attach the scales. Plus I really wanted to see how the handle is going to turn out

Aaah, you haven't glued yet. Hadn't noticed that!
Yeah, know what you meant about the scratches. A pain in the wotsit! I was working on a Green River style blade earlier with an apple handle. all shaped down but scrathes round the tang that need working out - the metal dust is getting in the apple and being a nuisance.

Yea, it drives me nuts. Of course, you never see them until you think the knife is done. I have been unsuccessful at cleaning up the ricasso after the scales are glued on. I just booger it up worse. Hoping this will eliminate that issue for the most part.

Starting to shape the handles on the 10" wheel...
This is after the 10" wheel, 2" wheel, and slack belt...
Next is hand sanding the handles then cleaning up the steel...

I am using Klingspor AO belts starting with 60 grit, 120, 220, 320 (1" scallped belt), then hand sand.
That ironwood is super tough. The redwood cuts like butter next to the ironwood. I started with a belt I had been using on micarta and switched to a fresh belt real quick.

Just got some cool materials in for an order. Mammoth ivory and mammoth tooth. Never worked this type of material and could really use a few pointers. The price tag makes me nervous to even touch them

Just starting the hand sanding on the ironwood...
Cleaned up to 320 grit for now. I will take it a lot finer after the scales are epoxied on...
Blade flats cleaned to 400 grit...
Makers mark etched...
And now it is in the tumbler, then it will get acid etched and tumbled again.

Sharp fresh belts and slower speed! Iron wood is always pig to work. Clean out your belts often or it clogs and starts to burn. Wear a respirator too. I know a few makes that got sinus infections working Iron wood.

Randy Haas is the one around here that works the most of those materials. PM Randy.
Going slow and use fresh belts are always good guidelines to follow.

Thank you, Laurence. I always wear my respirator when in the shop. Learned my lesson at the beginning. Thanks for the tips.

Finished a few and am working on some new leather projects...
Just a little practicing before trying it on the real sheath...
I am going to lose the crack in the head and figure out how to make the lines more crisp. Pretty happy with my first two tries, though.
