Press Build

This whole project started as a want definitely not a need. Another thing that contributed to it was a friend that bought a Coal Iron 12T press. He busted my chops about how he got his first! Well when your unemployed because of Covid a press is an expense you don't need! Anyway I started collecting "THINGS" when money allowed. Best part is he doesn't even know about the press! Haven't told him a thing, just gonna say hey look what I built when it's done! I also have a little trinket I'm gonna put on it as a joke (see pic)! LOL!!

LOL that's awesome! Love the Binford badge.

COVID put a huge damper on all kinds of my projects. The price materials screwed up some jobs I had lined up. Basically, the cost of materials kept my customers from pulling the trigger.

Even the stuff I do for free is too expensive right now.

Almost there! Hydraulics mostly plumbed just have to hook up control to Hydraulic cylinder on frame after I finish paint it. Need to put the gauge on it too almost forgot that! That would not have been good!!

Congrats - you're getting there and it looks good. Waiting patiently until you get to make your first Damascus billet.

I see someone has proper taste in trucks!

I like the color. "Blue jeans", right? I haven't driven a 3.5 Ecoboost, but I know the 5.0s have PLENTY of power.

I have 20K on the 4.6 in my truck, so hopefully I won't be in the market for a new F150 for a while. I'm going to wait a little while longer, then start looking at supercharging it.

I've got one of the "old" 2013 F150s with 3.5 Eco-Boost .... Only got 40K miles so should last a while. No complaints so far.

I get just under 19 MPG in town and 24ish on trips. It will haul 11.5K. And it's a blast smoking kids with the Fart cans on their Hondas!! LOL!!

I never understood the whole giant exhaust tip thing or running a straight through muffler on a little car like that. Lot of extra noise for nothing. Like mosquitos buzzing down the road.

If the mounting of tank has room for the valves I do like that idea. It provides the ability to change hoses without draining the tank.

Ok winding down on this, FINALLY!! Waiting for
a gauge snubber. That will be the last piece for the Hydraulics. Pending any leaks we should be squishing steel very soon? Still need to weld the top flatter die. Wanted to tack block onto mounting plate with some pressure on it to make sure dies align. Have to go to steel place to get a small piece of 1-1/4" round bar (drawing dies) and some more 1" plate for softer radius drawing dies and maybe some dies to widen blades. Plus going to the steel place is fun!! LOL!!

"g" for gauge snubber? You think the gauge will need a snubber to keep needle from being hard to read? I'm using an oil filled gauge and it's pretty steady without a snubber. That sure is a pretty blue - paint job makes it look professional :) That looks like the same START/STOP button used by Coal Iron presses. A very good choice.

Good job.

I'm putting snubber on as a suggestion from a friend who is a Hydraulics pro. More to prevent the gauge from dying then it is to read. That's what he told me anyway LOL!! I found the Stop Start on Ebay, only 16 bucks and rated for 30A 250VAC.

In industry with a pulsing load we used a snubber for sure. The fluid load in the press has a bit of a "pulse" when it goes from 600 psi low pressure travel to 20,000 psi when squishing a billet. BUT - that happens so seldom in the life of the press I don't see it as much of an issue, especially when the gauge costs $13 and the snubber costs... how much? Oh, just checked and they're about the same price as the gauge. I remember the snubbers purchased in industry and they were expensive, but the gauges used were a good bit more expensive than what I'm using also.

A rotary gear pump doesn't have as much pulses as a piston pump where the snubber would be more important.

You got the snubber, use it. It can only help. At only $11.56 maybe I'll install a snubber:) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IT9EV80/?

Please do remember, the ONLY real personal hydraulic experience I've got is with my Coal Iron press and it didn't even come with a pressure gauge or fluid filter. Two things I consider important, and not that expensive to include, especially compared to the $3,000 price tag of the 9 ton press I ordered, and got an 8 ton.

Yeah I ordered one from Zoro it was 15 bucks shipped so I said why not! Project was fun but at sometimes stressful! Not really knowing what I was doing, learning from books and web. Finally got that friend of mine to give me some pointers. I will say though I was pretty much spot on with design, he was impressed (head swelling now!). I just don't want anyone getting hurt while using it! Including me!!
