Hi! I'm working on my first lockback and would appreciate some input. Do the locking bar need to be hardened and how hard do it need to be, can I only harden the tip of the locking bar and leave the rest soft so I can do some filework or inlays into it? What hardness is suitable for the...

    Forced air burner tuning?

Yes, the forge and anvil setup is just temporary. I need to pour a new floor and a foundation for my hammer so in the mean while I'm trying to get my forge running as it should. I think I really need to find a new blower, the blower I'm using now is almost as heavy as the anvil on the picture...

    Forced air burner tuning?

Hi, At first I covered the wool with a fireclay but it didin't work that good. It shrinked very much when drying so it cracked a lot, after a few coats it did look okay but almost everything fell off in the first heating of the forge. At the moment I have noting to cover the wool. I will, as...

    Forced air burner tuning?

Thanks once again for helping me Ed. The reson I put the burners like this, this time was to protect the wool from melting. At first I had a single burner, only 2 layers of wool and the burner was at a tangent, the wool melted after about 10 minutes, it's 2300 fahrenheit wool. I will try...

    Welding forge size?

Thank you Ed and Wayne! I've got an old compressor tank 12" diameter, maybe that would be a good size with 1" or 2" inch "wool". I can get wool locally, both 2300 degree and 2600 degree, the 2300 degree is twice as cheap though and the 2600 is only available as 2" thick. Maybe the best would...

Hi, I'm about to build a welding forge that will be used for damascus but I was wondering what size I need. It will be a horizontal design with blown burners. How thick does the layer of wool need to be and how big should the inside of the forge need to be? Should I use two or three...

    First folders finished!

Thank you Rob. No, it's not the pivo thats the problem, it's the other screws. But I don't have the problem when putting on new screws, but they do wear down quite fast, but thats not a problem now when the folder is finished. It's actually not a bushing I'm using, it's a small bearing like...

    First folders finished!

Thanks everybody :o Thank you Frank! The press fit is a Scandinavian thing I guess, here almost everybody use the same small bearings in the folders. I find it easier to use the bearings becasue you just use the correct reamer and press the bearing in and your done. I know we used the...

    Elmax data by Bohler-Uddeholm

What do you think of this steel compared to the CPM steels? It should be quite similar to s30v. How is it to grind before/after HT compared to 154CPM? Jakob

    rc tester???

Hi The files dont work that good on for example CPM steels becasue the carbides in the steel is much harden then the hardenss of the steel matrix. For example a test file at 59hrc will skate on CPM 154 blade at 55Hrc or even lower hardness. Regards Jakob
