My latest and most involved to date...

Ok, bunch of guys asking me if I won the build-off, and yes, I did. But, let me tell you a secret, whether you are a new maker or an old pro, you have to take good photos. There were entries in the contest that were probably great knives, but had lousy photos. I'm still pretty new as a maker and...

My latest and most involved to date...

This was my entry in a knife maker build-off contest over on FB. 50 makers entered, we were all given the same pattern with a rule that your are not allowed to alter the profile in any way. The materials and details were up to the makers and you were only allowed one photo to be turned in for...

My latest and most involved to date...

Here's one that's been under wraps for a while. It was a contest entry so I couldn't share the progress pics on here or FB and Instagram like I usually do, which was surprisingly hard. Specs: 416 layer Alabama Damascus, African Pomelle Sapele burl bolsters, file-worked copper liners, hidden...

    Snaps, studs, scratched blades.

I tried skiving the back on a test piece, still wasn't happy. Tried wetting the leather too, but problem there was it pulled down on both sides of the leather, still leaving it up. I'm going to try adding a little second layer circle or diamond on the outside next. Heck, I may end up just...

    Snaps, studs, scratched blades.

Yeah Ed, this particular knife didn't have a lot shape that would lend to good retention, I was afraid I couldn't keep it secure without a strap. I've still got a lot to learn on leather work!

    Snaps, studs, scratched blades.

Thanks a ton guys, lots of new ideas here. I've always made fold over style sheaths, so the second layer never occurred to me I guess. Here's the one I started roughing out, not sure if I can add a second layer on there and get it looking right. I am leery of putting a backer on the inside...

    Snaps, studs, scratched blades.

I need some advice, pics, links, etc. When using snaps and studs, how do you keep the backside from contacting the knife? I've used snaps a lot, but I just go some Sam Browne studs in to try. I tried carving a little recess, but it still isn't below flush. I've got some thin pigskin that I...

Have You Made One Of These?

When you're holding in the correct hand, you don't see the bevel. The flat side stays inboard.

    New (OLD) tool, a pantograph!

Not sure what ratios i have, the engraving on the scales is very faint and although stored indoors, has a very light coat of rust on them. I cant hardly make out the numbers. It'll clean up easily, just haven't had time yet.

    New (OLD) tool, a pantograph!

I know how to turn it on! Thats as far as i got, lol. It came with a few boxes of parts, letters, cutters etc, but all unsorted and dumped. It'll take me a while to get organized learn what it'll do. A video may come, but not soon. If anybody knows of a good website with training type info...

    New (OLD) tool, a pantograph!

Well, I found a great video on YouTube of a Deckel and I'd say mine is a direct copy of that design. I read that after WW2, people didn't want German made products, so copies started appearing elsewhere. Mine is an Alexander.

    New (OLD) tool, a pantograph!

Grabbed this guy today. Came with a t-slot table and a lettering table, tons of letters and dodads. Anybody good with these things? Where to get and what do you use for cutters? Its been in storage a few years, needs cleaned up but apears to be in great shape.

    Laser engraved makers mark

Oh, I've seen that. I thought you had it etched in the steel. How durable do you think the Mark will be?

    Laser engraved makers mark

John, those $400 lasers won't do steel. I've been pondering getting one of those for a while. They will do wood, leather, paper, etc. I was thinking about making custom wood boxes for knives with one. I even think they may be just hot enough to heat anodize logos or patterns on titanium too. But...

    Damascus surface prep

Ah, man! I was wondering if you ever had any luck. You need to get this figured out soon, that way when it cools down some you can help me! It's just too dang hot here to mess with a forge.

    Source for leather tools

I've got a few from Tandy and they are great. I've got a few from ebay, some imported, and they are hit or miss. If you watch ebay regularly, sometimes somebody will post a huge batch of old leather tools they've found in grandpa's garage as one big lot. I got some super nice old stamps once...

ICCE Knife Show in Kansas City

I just hope if they do move, it's not to another "downtown" area, I hate where it's at. Parking is terrible. I skipped last year, not sure if I can this year yet.

    Electro etch makers mark w/emblem

We have tried really hard to work with my daughter to use cursive, but she says at school they are told specifically note to sign their name in cursive. Eventually, everyone's "signature" will be printed, kids just aren't being taught.

    Electro etch makers mark w/emblem

But, you just made a mark that everybody from Millennials to younger cant read now, lol! The wife and I joke that cursive handwriting is our secret code that the kids can't read. My kids ages 14 and 15 were never taught cursive in school.
