What's going on in your shop?

Occasionally I get to have shop visitors for a day. Here is Jess Hoffman, Peter Martin and his son Cory Martin reviewing our plan.

Peter and I have been focused on forging Titanium. Here is a can I put together and filled it with Ti powder. Peter made a can also.

We pre-heated the cans to 1800F in an oven. Ti in a can acts very differently than steel. It also tends to squirt out broken seams. This seemed be a prudent safety precaution. We should have preheated to 1950.

Both cans failed. Here are the corpses. Long story short, there are probably several reasons for the failure.
Not enough heat. We need an argon purge going the entire time and the powder we used was not the right stuff.

We have found better powder and we will be setting up an argon purge for the next test.

Here we spent several hours celebrating and analyzing our failure.

a shop like that deserves a better celebratory beer, the champagne of beers is not high on MY list of tasty beverages LOL

Nice Tracy! What's the thickest material that you can burn?

Loctite makes a spray on ceramic based anti spatter coating for copper consumables. It is stupid expensive in the ballpark of $40 for an aerosol can, but it adds a miraculous amount of life to nozzles and drag shields on the automated stuff. Enough to double or triple life of the $25 plus parts on a torch.

Worked on these 2 today. AEB-L blanks, 60 rockwell. I had these heat treated several years ago. O e was ground and one wasn't. Cleaned up the grinds on the one I did before, going to work on the handle profile tomorrow hopefully. Made a bevel grinding jig, too and it worked super well after I got the hang of it!146129453_10101620808623720_7305964967605986694_o.jpg

My buddy makes steel cut-outs/signs with a plasma and making decent side money. I traded him a cleaver for a sign, those things are so cool.

Finished up the bottom blank and did a sheath for it this week! Customer was looking for a slicey knife and this sucker is thin! I made a few bevel grinding jigs as well, so I have been trying those out. I tried one with 2 brass screws on the baseplate and one using a hinge and 1 screw so it slides flat on the tool rest vs being on the edge of the piece.

I'm on lock down right now. 18 degrees and lightly snowing. The old 'milk house' heater doesn't do the trick at this time. Down to below 10 they say next Wednesday. Oh well the 5 sheaths worked for a while but are completed now. Cruising the internet and drinking coffee is about all I get completed.
