What's going on in your shop?

Some sort of resin I got from someone on Instagram to try. The other scales are mokume.

I like that! Is it going to be a sort of parang?

Thanks John, I kind of based the design off a competition style chopper. Chris Taylor has been helping me out and bugging me to maybe compete in a little chopping contest so thought I would try my hand at it. I just hope I can pull off the heat treat, edge geometry, grinds and pretty much everything else that goes along with building a knife this big. This will by far be the biggest knife I have attempted.

I had a customer give me a block of natural Koa that he wanted for his handle. I am making him a large Chinese Chef knife and the block of Koa was a little too short. I made a composite handle by adding on some figured asian satin wood.

Love it! I really like how it looks like a fixed blade knife when the blade is open. Very unique look, Daniel.

Still working on the big chopper, slowly but surely.
If the video link works here is a short video of the heat treat quench.
Few other pics, Im getting there.

I was going to leave it at that but after looking at the wavy grind over and over in the pic I decided i need to take it all the way to the spine.

Took the grinds full height and fixed up my 2" belt bump....but i have another problem. I did some testing and chipped the edge on antler. Two things I assume I either got the edge a little to thin, or I need to temper a bit higher to take out some hardness.

That's looking pretty good Justin! I like that your sharing some of the failures as well, that doesn't get done enough.....anywhere.

This is my latest knife. I have been struggling to finish knives because I keep starting new things and it seems like knives never get finished; however, I did finish this one out of W2 with my first cord wrap and I really like it. The sheath works super smooth....Sharpend to a 6000 mirror edge...not to bad for cutting bananas:eek::D...

I just wanted to share! Comments are more than welcomed!

Here is the crappy video I made of me doing the testing of the chopper.

Also started a little forging project after work. Railroad spike knife in the works.
I think I read, maybe on here that to heat them to non magnetic then quench in water with no temper...any experience anyone wants to share. I know this is not what you want to make a knife from and known steel trumps all but I feel I need to make one as kind of a forgeing right of passage!

Daniel, you are doing it all lately! Folders now forging, I like it.

Worked a little more on the RR spike, feel this was as good as I could get it under my hammer. I will take it to the grinder now.
