Question about bone.

Jantz Supply sells bone slabs,and in the cataloge they have it listed as
White Bone.I was given a piece a while back,and really liked the way it worked.
Could anyone tell me what type of bone this is?
What spacies is good to cut slabs of bone out of? I have noticed several
sellers on ebay,selling different species of leg bones,I'm just not sure
what,if any,of this might be good to cut slabs out of.

I don't think that the species is as important as the shape and size of it. I know that cattle bone is used for smaller scales. I have a giraff leg bone that I intend to cut up one of these days and some elk leg bone that may work. I also know that cammel bone is used. Just avoid irregular bones that you might have problems cutting scales from.

Some of larger pet stores at malls have large bleached cow bones (for pet chews).
You pick through them for just the right one. They were short money and thick enough to get nice scales out of them. I cut em up and let them sit in a jar with RITT dye. Be prepred for the smell when grinding on them if they get hot....it will gag a maggott.

Just about any bone will work as long as it is the right shape and large enough to get your scales. And yes it does smell horrible when grinding. My wife used to hate it when I had my shop in the basement.

Giraffe and camel is more dense and solid than cow bone but any are strong enough for a knife handle. If you are using thick pieces the more solid core can be a factor.

Bone can be stabilzed but there are a lot of bone handled knives out there that were made 100 years before anyone heard of stabilizing. Like ivory, avaoid getting it hot or it will tend to crack.

My problem was finding something thick enough.
I thought leg bones from local cows would work,
but I have cut up several leg bones,and have not
found anything thick enough.I may just save up
and get me a giraffe bone.I found some on ebay.
