Howdy everybody. My name is Mark and Im from Arnold, about 20 minutes south of St. Louis, MO.
I've been making knives at a slower pace for the past three years or so, a total of about 45 with quite a few unfinished/scrapped jobs. I work with high carbon steels. Right now its exclusively 1080 becuase of some bad heat treating experiences with some 1095 and 5160, and for the fact that 1080 works so well (as I have read) with my heat treat methods.
I work with three different forges, all home made. I'll use charcoal for larger blades in my long forge, coal/coke in my "traditional" forge, and the "one brick" forge for most smithing and heat treat.
I am currently a student persueing a double major in graphic design and studio art. Art is a new venture for me as I was previously persueing a degree in education. I hope that some ceramic and cold working metal classes aid in my knife making.
Knifemaking has been philosophical endeavor of mine. Its also really fun. I love experimenting and the endless amount of info out there makes for some really interesting projects. Of course the knifemaking community happen to be some of the most sharing and generous people out there and I do my part to keep it that way.
Anyway, sorry for the book up there. Just saying hi, and I look forward to perusing the forum and making friends.
