I’ve always thought that choosing an axe should start with what you want to do with it, not just how it looks.
A bearded axe has a distinctive shape, but the head profile, handle length, weight, steel, and balance all matter when comparing different designs. A shorter axe is easier to carry, while a longer haft gives you a different feel and reach. Neither is automatically better. It depends on the job and the person using it.
Steel and maintenance are worth considering too. High carbon steel can take a good working edge, but it needs to be cleaned and dried after use and protected from moisture to help prevent rust. A wooden handle also deserves regular inspection, especially around the axe head and wedge.
For anyone researching traditional Viking-style axes, Ransack Viking has a collection worth browsing. This bearded axe is one example, with a high carbon steel head, a 19-inch overall length, a birch handle, and a leather blade cover.

One thing I’d be interested to hear from other axe owners: do you prefer a shorter haft for carrying and general handling, or a longer handle for your particular use?

Always good to hear what has worked for people who actually spend time with their tools.
