    Another Kephart Pattern

Very nice, I like the clean look. If I can ask, where do you get the thin G10 for the liners?

    Monday night grinding practice

Wow, that’s awesome!! I know the members of this forum appreciate this, but until a person tries to grind something like that they can only appreciate the beauty, not the skill and artistry. I am still struggling to get my plunge/bevel lines “close enough” and find it both inspiring and a...

    Noobie questions on HT 1095

Thank you for the help. Just out of curiosity, if I had normalized the blank and re- HT would that have fixed the problem or would these cracks persisted? I assume normalization/re-HT would have fixed the granularity?

    Noobie questions on HT 1095

Well I broke it, looked a lot like the upper picture, maybe even more coarse. Now did I over heat, was it the quench or does the coarse grain only imply that the heat treatment was poorly executed?

    Noobie questions on HT 1095

Ha, I'm still new enough at this that intentionally breaking one of my knives would be like beating my dog. Still I would do it if I thought it would help, however since I have never looked at a broken knife I don't think it would help me a bit. Maybe some day sone I will HT several pieces of...

    Noobie questions on HT 1095

Overheating was my best guess, but my best guess is worth next to nothing. I know it was labeled 1095 and purchased from Jantz Supply; I have no reason to doubt it. Is there a better quench for 1095 or O1 for the ocassional /novice heat treater? I wasn' going to finish the knife but the handle...

    Noobie questions on HT 1095

After about 30 tries, I got a good picture to show what I am talking about. Maybe this will help. Although this pic makes it look pretty noticeable you have to get the light reflecting just right to see them, they didn't show up until about 800 grit and you can't feel them. This is currently...

    Noobie questions on HT 1095

Relatively new to knife making and generally send my blades out for HT but thought I would try to heat treat some 1095. Heated my blank (flat ground) to non-magnetic in my 2-brick forge heated w MAP torch, held for a couple of minutes and quenched in 120 degree canola oil, came out straight...

    grinding help please

I finally got my 2x72 grinder up and running and am working or the learning curve. I ground a couple out of mild steel for practice then jumped in, completely ruined the third attempt, got into trouble and the more I tied to fix it the worse it got, finally got the edge too thin and overheated...

    Why run buffers so fast?

I have heard repeatedlly that the most dangerous machine in a knife shop is the buffer, and I believe it. But why does a buffer need to run at 3600 rpm? I am currently using my drill press with a 6" buff running at ~700 rpm, it takes a couple of minutes (or more) to buff a blade but I don't...

    Need to spend $1000

Here’s the deal, I am building a barn/tool shed and I have allotted myself a 16’x20’ space in the corner for a workshop. This is a hobby for me and I have put off spending the money because I know I will never cover the cost. But, I got to thinking and I have spent more money with less...

A dunk bucket tip for all!

The toxic ingredient in antifreeze is ethylene glycol. Not to be confused with Propylene glycol, which is commonly use in cosmetics and in small amounts in food or with ethyl alcohol which some of us have been known to consume (in small quantities of course). Immediately after ethylene...

    Powered met'l

????? To me that would be my 68 Camero convertible, 396/4 speed and 4:11 gears. I sold that car in 1975 when I got married. But I guess others will have a different opinion.

    Bloster finish questions

Any tips on keeping the metal dust from bolsters from staining my handle? I am making a knife with a maple handle with NS bolsters and the silver is making my maple look dirty. I have noticed this before but with a darker wook it hasn't been significant. I've tried to sand the different...

    WIP/What's wrong

I looked at a lot of knife pictures and couldn't fine any where the lower front part of the handle was lower than the ricazzo, even with a guard/bolster. That's why it didn't look right to me but I wasn't smart enough to realize. Thanks, Michael

    WIP/What's wrong

Rudy, Yep, too big, 1.25x1.5" on the small end, just short of 5" long. I think I'll follow your example and cut them into scales and use them elsewhere. Now back to the planning stage. LonePine, I plan to decrease the size of the guard, just left it large so I had extra to work with. I'll...

    WIP/What's wrong

First off, I am new to knife making. I realize I should probably make the same knife over and over until my skills are better but that would be boring. Each knife I am working on I have tried to do something new/different for me. This knife started of as a piece of damascus (haven;t worked...

Second fixed blade and first slipjoint.

    Knives for Servicemen-Maker input wanted

I'm a new maker but would be happy to help in any way. Given materials I will grind/polish/assemble, contribute $ to help defray cost or given a design and suggested materials I'll do a complete build (except HT).
