    Good Equipment = Good Investment

Still sorting everything out, much is still up in the air at this point. Working with a builder on a possible expansion or total new shop. Will post more as I get this moving in a definate direction.

Prayers for my wife as she battles cancer

So sorry to see this Cliff, praying for your wife, you, and your family. During times like this it is hard to understand God's purpose, but He has one, and although His ways are so different from ours, we are comforted by knowing we are His children and He loves us dearly, and knows what is best...

    Good Equipment = Good Investment

I've always believed that good equipment will pay for itself (if the skills are developed and equipment properly used). I am in the process of selling off my current generation equipment and I am finding that my return on good quality used pieces have held their value over a few years. One piece...

Starting An Elk Antler and Sanbar Stag Antler Knife

Pommel roughed in. You can see enough of this to determine where it is going, so this is it for this thread.

Gimping and dying the white to match the antler, shape pommel, cleanup and done.

Starting An Elk Antler and Sanbar Stag Antler Knife

The majority of knives I make are less than eight inches oal, and between .072 and .090 pregrind thickness. Total weight has never been an issue and feel very balanced in hand. Multiple epoxy holes are beneficial, but I have never had a failure with two pins applied correctly. As you say, it...

Starting An Elk Antler and Sanbar Stag Antler Knife

Dennis, I seem to have better luck balancing the knife right at the bolster this way. It may be from my blade length to tang length ratio, coupled with my grind. Thanks for asking, I had not thought about it before, but I'll have to play with some soon to see what happens. I know I personally...

Starting An Elk Antler and Sanbar Stag Antler Knife

Slow going right now, other irons in the fire. Will try to get this one finished up before the upcoming weekend ends. Cleaned up the slot for the bolt with a 1/8" bit. An end mill would work well also. The bolt needs just enough room to pivot a bit to allow the pommel to fit square and flush...

    Etching machine build.

That's a very nice unit you built there, Daniel, does not have that "homemade" look to it at all.

Tiger Striped Handle and Stripes Cont'd On Blade Spine

They were for me, the long work periods peering through my fly tying mag light gave me a splitting headache.

    Saw blade

I use a lot of this in 15n20 and until I started annealing I lost a lot of bits to hard spots in it. Haven't lost one since I started annealing and very slow cool in ht kiln (overnight).

Triangle needle file to start, then round needle file.

Tiger Striped Handle and Stripes Cont'd On Blade Spine

Well, this is the first (and last) of the reeded/coin edge spacers I will try, a big thank you to John Doyle for the inspiration, and no thank you for more, I'd as soon poke flaming slivers of wood in my eyes. I wanted something on this "different", so thought I'd try "striping" the blades spine...

Starting An Elk Antler and Sanbar Stag Antler Knife

I hesitate to call what I do a WIP, this is just the process I use, there are better, more efficient ways of doing things (and, as soon as I think wip, it goes off the rails :) ). If you keep the solder application to a minimum, clean isn't so bad. Another way to remove it is with a course...

Starting An Elk Antler and Sanbar Stag Antler Knife

Hammered the solder flat, it only takes a tiny bit. The flattened part would be enough for a dozen knives, or more. I use a plumber's solder rag to wipe excess solder while it is still flowing, keeps cleanup to a minimum. Graphite on the ricasso area just in front of the bolster makes any...

Starting An Elk Antler and Sanbar Stag Antler Knife

At the back side of the bolster there is a gap left as an epoxy pool area for when the African blackwood goes on. (see previous pic) Bolster sides ground down to flat, no pin lines will show on this one when complete. I have tried several bolsters with epoxy in the recent past, I just don't...

Starting An Elk Antler and Sanbar Stag Antler Knife

Gave up trying to finish a pin press for this so I am continuing on peening the pins to the bolster. Pins are tight, now need to grind off all but a heavy 32nd protruding from each side. Now ground down to start peening.

I'm seriously considering giving up knife making

Take a deep breath, take a break and if you love it (and from what I've seen of your work, you do AND you have the requisite skills for this), you will be back at it soon, hitting your mark again. I suspect we all go through this, I don't care who it is, or how long they've been at it. If it...

26C3 Hamon attempt w/ New Pics

I watched ebay for a used Ames model, ended up with a PHR model, a clone of the Ames. These little testers have the same range of accuracy as the benchtop models. I had wanted the larger Wilson benchtop model but never saw any of the $500 deals I read about. The PHR's can be had new for just...
