This is 3 layers. Mild steel outside with a white paper steel core. .105 thick as heat treated. The edge didn't chip or roll with a brass rod. I did some more digging and found the suggestion it needs ground before heat treat. I've ground the edge back and heading back to the oven.

Has anyone used this san mai? The outer layers are mild steel I think. I followed the heat treat temps and the edge seems hard but I can bend the blade by hand. I did grind post heat treat. Maybe that's the issue.

Previous answers have it right. The edges of a J weight belt (thin/flexible) have scallops of about 3/8". I use 120g, 220g and 400g then hand sand from there.

"Have you thought about drilling more holes in the tang?" As a water works guy, I learned that a 2" pipe has as much area as 4 - 1" pipes. I see many guys drilling a lot of small holes, but if it's weight reduction bigger is better. If you don't believe me about bigger is better ask any girl.

When I started I watched a post on Salem Straub's website. He ground with a push stick. I copied that and haven't looked back.

I carry a Latham frame lock flipper. Mine is the one on the left. AEB-L blade, smooth and light.
