    Hamon procedure

Dennis- what’s the theory/purpose of the used motor oil soak? Does the carbon particulate in the old oil collect in the pores of the hamon line and darken it? If so then that makes sense. I wonder if dry graphite powder like used for lubricating locks and hinges would have the same effect...

    DPH- 80crv2 with G-10

Thanks Sean. I ended up etching several times to get the shade i wanted. I would do about 5 minutes in a 4:1 H20:FeCl solution, then neutralize and rub with 000 steel wool, I probably did 3-4 cycles like that. Then at the very end after the handles were shaped I put FeCl on a Q-Tip and just...

    DPH- 80crv2 with G-10

Well since I blew up my mini-cleaver in the quench this morning, I figured I’d try to finish the other knife I had in work. (This is the project that prompted my other post about finishing G-10.) OAL is about 8” with a 3.75” edge length. No attempt at a hamon on this one but I etched in FeCl...

    Hate it when this happens!

I’ve been working on my latest knife, wanted to take run at a “mini-cleaver”. This is probably only my 7th or 8th blade so far, but things were going great... 1075 and I had it all prepped with Rutledge for the hamon... quenched this am in Parks and heard the dreaded “tink”.... sure enough when...

    Finishing G-10 Handles

I'm just finishing up a knife on which I used Ultrex G-10, in laminated black / gray color. Once I've got it all shaped and final sanded, I'm wondering if I should apply a final clear finish to really make the laminations "pop". If so what would be the right stuff to use? Or do folks not...

    Forged in Fire Testing

I've thought the same for a while now... the tests are getting ridiculous. At least the initial "abuse" testing. The follow on ones afterwards seem to have some thought put into them based on the type of blade that is being tested. Does anyone actually use their bowie knife to chop antlers...

    Law Enforcement Knives

Looks awesome to me! I really like the blue liners with the black scales. I also saw some black and blue G-10 on USAknifemaker that would be cool for a LEO themed knife. -andy

    Two Plunge-less knives

Looks great, I really like the shape of the green handled one. I'm pretty new to knife making and am trying to imagine or picture how to do a plungless grind, and how it transitions to the non ground / full thickness area of the tang. Andy

    A Fighter to the end

Nice! Agree with Von Gruff about the Damascus and spalted handle complimenting each other. Good work! Andy

    Greetings from the PNW

Welcome... fellow PNW-er here. I'm pretty new here too but have so far been really impressed with this community. Both for the technical expertise and the fellowship / comraderie / "brotherhood" that there is here. -Andy
