    Good Morning!

Good morning to you, too, Sin, and welcome to KnifeDogs! My Paragon has been in my shop since the '80s. 'Nuff said.

Should I forge M390 super steel? Or stock remove only?

I forged a bowie by hand out of 440C once. That was enough. Try forging it, once, even if you go the stock removal route. It is worth experiencing the difference vs plain carbon.

Yea, but it's a different kind of heat

Amazingly small world for being so big! I remember a couple kids in classes up in Winthrop Harbor days where the kids would get pulled from classes every year to go back down South to harvest. They were a couple years older than us because of those educational delays. Riding in -10F must...

Yea, but it's a different kind of heat

Well, then you definitely know the area, or at least the area then. Zion is about three miles, I suppose. What used to be the county area south of Zion incorporated as Beach Park to avoid annexation. Zion is still dry and bars outside each end of town are always busy. You’d be surprised just how...

Yea, but it's a different kind of heat

We’ve had a few days above 90 already here about 7 miles from the IL/WI border and less then a mile from Lake Michigan. This is really early for us, as it usually doesn’t start to hit 60 consistently until the beginning of June. Had a couple cooler days this week only about 80 and a little...

Forge and knife shaped object (non hardenable)

Sorry, Bradley, I put my post in the wrong thread and don’t know quite how I managed that. It was intended for another thread, but I see Chris saw it, so that’s good. Again, sorry for the intrusion.

Forge and knife shaped object (non hardenable)

I would consider annealing the hammer head, re-forming the flat end by grinding to better resemble the pein end, drill both ends, and make a straightening hammer with oblong-shaped carbides that the two ends oppose each other like a vertical/horizontal peen forging hammer. The hammer doesn't...

Forge and knife shaped object (non hardenable)

That's definitely case hardening. The piece should be completely covered with the carbon source. Most modern files are made that way, Bradley, which is why they aren't any good for knives with that mild steel core.

    First Catastrophic Failure...

I have not done this type of technique, but I have seen others use a more oblong point like the one at about 3:30 in the cited image. It may provide more stretch and a bit less point source impact for a more gentle experience for the blade, but still effective. I hope you can see the pic. If...

    First Catastrophic Failure...

Are those marks where the hammer struck, Chris? Looks like the blade cracked along a line of those marks. What does the geometry of your carbide point look like?

    Platen Assembly Modifications

VERY neat grinder mod, sir! I've long wanted a horizontal platen to try and flat grind on freehand. Thank you for sharing!

    Anyony using Kirinite for scales?

Thanks for that testimony. Mine was simply a chemistry opinion without specific experience with the Kirinite polymer, and why I just jumped right to saying scrap the knife. ;)

    Morland Picture Gallery

Really neat little knife. All that's missing is the pheasant or trout. :) Bada$$ stitching... And for a fireman. Very cool.

    Anyony using Kirinite for scales?

Can Kirinite tolerate acetone? Being an acrylic product, I would have thought acetone will dissolve it slightly, leaving the surface hazed. I suggest trying on a scrap first.

    Re-handle opinions…

You had it figured out before you even posted. Shake the dust off and move on. One AH move by another won't ruin your rep.

Tong choices or big pliers maybe?

I wonder how many of us saw those long pliers and had to have a pair? Mine arrived mid-week. Thanks for the tip, @52 Ford !! :)

Tong choices or big pliers maybe?

"However, many current products labeled "MAPP" are, in fact, MAPP substitutes. These versions are composed almost entirely of propylenewith minuscule impurities of propane (<0.5%).[1]" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAPP_gas The stuff actually in the bottle doesn't get as hot as it used to, in...
