    Porta Band

Makes sense, I like Your stand. I still clamp mine on a vise. That’s getting old fast.

    Porta Band

I love the stand. I made a table for mine also. Any thoughts on where you cut your slot for the blade. I have it on that side also, but I was told it’s better in the front. That way you don’t have to take the table off to change the blade. It’s no big deal.

    Forging versus Forging.

Knife makers are very similar to being a butcher. When I was an apprentice , I learned how to breakdown quarters, boning , down to slicing the steaks. Today most of that happens in a huge meat facility and the stores get everything broken down already and ready to slice. So the newer breed of...

    Forging versus Forging.

I know that sounds confusing but It’s the only way I could think of asking. When I see a block of steel Heated hammered to the shape of a knife, I get that’s forging. But when is it not forging? If I take a bar of stock steel and hammer the clip point of the blade and then Maybe hammer the...

    Which Steel creates more scale?

Yup tk I think you nailed it. I don’t plan on forging though but I want the ability to heat my steel quickly sometime, either for a hammered look, certain effects. I will never forge my blades. My shoulder is missing some anatomy from surgery during my meat cutting days, but am looking forward...

    Which Steel creates more scale?

I know I have asked this question before but i am looking at different variables. Do certain steels produce more scale/black after quenching? 1075 versus 1095 for example. Does forging versus stock create more of a blackened bar after quenching?

    One for my son.

Thanks I still need to work on that area of the scale meets the ricasso. This one has a 90 degree. I need to work on a bevel there.

    One for my son.

Go for it, it’s not my original design. I see a few random ads with something similar. I just thought it was a cool design and no plunge line to mess up.

    One for my son.

1/8 1095. 9.5 OAL. Walnut Scales. He didn’t want a sheath, just something to keep it in. So I made him a leather case. I cold hammered the finish pre heat treat.

    Colored sandpaper issues.

Yes I think the high grit black was the culprit it was wet , and the black slush I think stained it. I fixed it and won’t do that again.

    Catholic Priest gift

I am a fair weather Catholic. Ya know, I go to mass on the major holidays. I personally think priests take a vow of poverty and a knife could be considered too expensive of a gift. I am a therapist and I take an oath that I do not accept gifts from my clients. I see children, so what is...

    Colored sandpaper issues.

Am I just late to the party regarding sandpaper. I really don’t concentrate on the color more than the quality. Are there colors that stain. I used a black 600 grit and had to go back down to 220. I wasn’t sure if the metal shavings of the spine was staining the wood or a little bit of water I...
