That's definitely case hardening. The piece should be completely covered with the carbon source. Most modern files are made that way, Bradley, which is why they aren't any good for knives with that mild steel core.

I have not done this type of technique, but I have seen others use a more oblong point like the one at about 3:30 in the cited image. It may provide more stretch and a bit less point source impact for a more gentle experience for the blade, but still effective. I hope you can see the pic. If...

Are those marks where the hammer struck, Chris? Looks like the blade cracked along a line of those marks. What does the geometry of your carbide point look like?

Thanks for that testimony. Mine was simply a chemistry opinion without specific experience with the Kirinite polymer, and why I just jumped right to saying scrap the knife. ;)

Can Kirinite tolerate acetone? Being an acrylic product, I would have thought acetone will dissolve it slightly, leaving the surface hazed. I suggest trying on a scrap first.
