Shop Music Thread- what are you listening to today?

Modern Blues or Blues Rock all the way. Maybe some classic rock to give the others in the shop a break. I stream Pandora and RadioFM over the stereo.

    Colored sandpaper issues.

I usually use a blond type wood sandpaper when sanding light wood or g10 material that shows dirt. It won't last any time when used on metal but sometimes it is the only abrasive you can get away with.

    Mammoth ivory

Ed hits the main points. If the piece is too hot on your lips, it's too hot. I keep a piece of aluminum plate next to my grinder and rest the scales on it when it warms up. I would stabilize any ivory with out hesitation. Normally, the first thing is to inspect for cracks. If there are any...

    Pizza wheel axle?

A plain Pivot barrel to match the diameter of the center hole with screws. You could also use washers but they will trap food. https://usaknifemaker.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=pivot+barrel

    Pizza wheel axle?

the easiest and probably most robust method would be to peen a brass pin to hold it in place.

Makers Mark / Logo - On The Left or Right?

I think he had an occasional small run of the nude backside logo which are highly prized by collectors. I’ve only seen one in person at the Blade show and they wanted 5 grand for it.

    What grit to teach on?

Hollow or flat grind? How thick will the blank be? A kitchen knife is usually pretty thin and even a 50 or 60grit can get away from a nooby. I know a lot of guys that don't go bigger than 80grit. Definitely have him practice with some cheap mild in the same thickness and shape. Than try a mono...

    Headband Magnifier Recommendation?

I have two. One with a very short focal length, one with longer. I grab one when I need it but don’t wear them all the time. Brighter lights, like the sun, are what I count on.

    what is your EDC knife?

Today is this slim little frame lock. It’s off center, buggered in the back and the jumping is crap. I didn’t even put my name on it but I like the size and weight. I should make a nicer one some day.

What's going on in your shop?

ready for engraving- kinda. We are setting up the desktop CNC router to cut a rectangle for an inlay. I'll put an inlay on the front for engraving. I am behind on engraving so I need to work on that for a bit and then the next build will be a scale release auto. At some point soon, I'll shoot a...

What's going on in your shop?

... Time to fit some scales. This is microshred carbon fiber. The manufacture went out of business so this is my last piece of this. I hope we can find someone else to make it. Anyway, CF sands very very quickly. It's expensive to learn that. I am using a dull 220grit 1" belt with a slack belt...

What's going on in your shop?

I had to change out the rubber backing on my disc today. The edges had gotten chewed up so off with the old. Using 3m adhesive remover helped. I imagine any adhesive remover will work just fine. A stiff rubber backing will allow a little "give" to press in and get stubborn spots. It also...

What's going on in your shop?

Tried a coffee etch today. I like it. I used about 4oz of instant coffee with 14oz of warm tap water. The cheapest instant at Walmart I could find. This is about 20 minutes of soaking. Prep is the same as other damascus. Near mirror sanding, buffed and wiped clean with alcohol. No fingerprints...

Stop The Helicopter - Some Ways To Save a Finger

Great advice. The buffer is usually considered the most dangerous tool in the shop but the drill press hurts more people. I never hand hold any hole bigger than 1/4" and usually I use a vise at 3/16" and up.
