  • I would suggest you look on other sites to how the pipehawks were historically decorated. Check "Wild Rose Trading Company", they do a real good job dressing up their pipehawks.
On your hawk from Crazy Crow, I would only put a few tacks on it if you are going to try thowing it, otherwise you will "unbalance" it, if you add much more. If you are going to just use it for chopping, you can add tacks, rawhide on the handle, and maybe a "drop" like I put on mine. The Pipehawk you can put whatever you want on it cause it is more for looking at, than for using.
Nice, but you do know, the pipe head hawk is not for throwing. Look forward to seeing them when they're done.
That particular hawk is a "Mouse" hawk, and it is a small hawk, made for women and children. I would suggest this one www.crazycrow.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CCTP&Product_Code=4934-123-044&Category_Code=842-100-000 It is made for men, and is historically correct. Also, if you only dress it up with some brass tacks and don't "throw off" the weight, it is balanced for throwing too. These tomahawks were made for fighting and throwing, and will take a nice edge when you sharpen them.
I don't like that type of hawk, because the blade fits into a slot "cut" into the handle, and it is not as strong as the more commonly made type. The blade on that one is just pushed into a slot and tied to the handle with rawhide strips. On most tomahawks, the handle goes "through the head" of the hawk, making it stronger.
The knives are not old, the blades were "antiqued" to look old. I don't make knives, I'm a leathercraftsman. My knives are made for me by a friend of mine. All the weapons in my Album are my personal knives, swords, and guns.
I have a question for you. On the photo you showed me of the knife, you have only ground it half way. The Hudson Bay knife is flat ground all the way across the blade. Are you leaving it this way, or are you going to grind it flat?
No, the handle came with it, I just added the Brass tacks, the fringed & beaded "drop", and I put the "patina" on the head.
It's looking very nice. Really looking forward to seeing it when it's finished. I finished my new tomahawk. I posted a couple of pics in the "Tomahawk" section on the main board.
I made some drilling and grinding just 120 grit grinding and then HT. On the photo is also the brass i will make the washers from.
