2013 Knife Making Progress

Very nice work Steve. What kind of epoxy are you using? I noticed it was black. Or is that pigment added?

So, I just read this entire thread from page one. Absolutely awesome!! This entire thread is just an absolute inspiration. My new goal is to be half as good in twice the time ;)

Thanks for taking the time to post all of this!

Thank you, Brinven!

Your kind words really mean a lot. I read it from start to finish myself the other day and cringe at some of the pictures but that is what this thread is all about. My failures and achievements. This is proof that anyone can do it, you just can't give up. I almost did a few times but worked through the issues and am still having a blast with all of this. The amount of things I have learned this year are incredible. I have never devoted so much time into one thing. Very happy with the way it is all turning out. I went from trying to make my first knife to having over 50 orders in less than 6 months. I had to stop taking orders a few months ago to try and catch up. It is all blowing my mind really.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

A few more pictures of what I have been up to lately...

Now that I got some leather work out of the way, it's time to get back to the steel...

I have to hand it to you Steve, you're getting my vote for new maker this year! Your work is top notch.

22 more almost ready for heat treat. I really didn't want to start on another batch but there are four in here that I need to finish before Christmas. In order to save money, I went ahead and made 18 more...

Steven, I have been under the weather the past few days and have lacked motivation to go in the garage and mess with my knives I have going. I just re-read your thread from beginning to end and I am fired up and ready to do work! I've said it before but your progress through this thread is inspiring. If you have the time, I would like to hear more about how you go about stonewashing. I picked up a vibratory tumbler at HF the last time I was in there but haven't had a chance to really research how to do it.

Steven I know the feeling ha! I needed to make a few for friends, decided ah I might as well make 20 so I can send them all off for heat treat ha.

Hope you are feeling better. I have been sick on and off for two weeks now. The flu is hitting everyone I know.

Thank you so much for the comments. Gives me motivation to get in the shop myself.

I am still experimenting but just finished up one that I am very pleased with the finish on. I use ceramic media from McMaster-Carr, 36 grit silicon carbide, A little tumbling soap and let it tumble for around 20 to 30 minutes. Then I etch it in muriatic acid for around 10 to 15 minutes and then back in the tumbler for another 25 minutes. The more I do, the better finish I get.

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks, Matt!

I'm real happy with the way this one turned out. The micarta seemed a little different than the last stuff I used.

Thank you! It has been pretty crazy. My last two knives of this year will be a challenge, mammoth ivory and mammoth tooth. Can't wait to compare them to my first two knives.

Its kind of sad to see this year, and this thread, end. Couldn't have gotten this far without this wonderful forum and its awesome members.
