Shop picture thread.

Well these pics pretty much suck but they give an idea... my shop is in the garage, I had an electrician run 40 amps of power out from the house's 100 amp box, me and a buddy put a boat-load of outlets in and wired 'em up. We also hung some flourescents to brighten the place up; there will be more smaller flourescents behind the bench to kill shadows, but I don't have them mounted yet.

All the power-tool outlets are 20 amps, the accessory outlets are 15 amps. There's a dedicated 20-amp outlet for the kiln, which isn't installed yet :/

The whole shop is insulated at a minimum of R11, fully moisture-barriered and sheathed with OSB. Thank God, the roof is in good shape and doesn't leak at all. We reinforced the joists and put a floor in the attic for storage space, lots of room up there. The garage door is lined with pink foamboard stuff and all cracks/seams throughout are sealed with "Great Stuff" foam to stop wind/leaks. I think I used 7 or 8 cans of "Great Stuff" but it was worth it.

I bought a basic B&D paint sprayer to slap some white primer, then paint on the walls, really helps brighten the place up.

Total cost so far... about $2500 to make a basic shell of a garage into a fairly decent shop. DON'T tell the tax assessor!!

Plenty of power and space, but I still need to put a natural gas furnace in so I can work comfortably in the winter months. That will prolly cost me about $600. In the long run, it will be much more efficient than running a kerosene or electric heater.

I didn't take pics of the south wall because it's cluttered with lumber scraps and camping stuff

pic 1... couldn't ask for a nicer location. Behind the shop is a rather large wetland/forest/swamp that houses deer, woodpeckers, bunnies, all that good stuff. I can't go get the mail in winter without seeing turkey and coon tracks in the snow. I see wildlife on a daily basis, and that makes me smile. Very little traffic noise; been here almost a year and I still haven't heard a cop siren or neighbors fighting. 2thumbs Yet I'm only a couple miles from grocery stores, hospital, my kid's school, etc.
pic 2... main bench with the grinder and drill press. The 2x42 will one day get replaced with a proper 2x72, but for now, it's earning its keep
pic 3... I think I have enough handle materials to last a while
pic 4... if you were as handsome as me, you'd wear a full-face-shield too! Or, if you were as ugly as me, you'd hide your mug too... whichever helps you sleep at night :D

I'm no slave to fashion.. so my shop is going to be a little different.

The free gas grill got changed into a Zowada gas forge. The coal forge does not get much use these days.

Garbage can anvil:
The Peter Wright anvil is bolted to a wood block set in sand. I can add or subtract sand to adjust the height. I don't have to chase dropped steel and there is a convenient place to leave my hammer between heats.

Power hammers:
I bought the LG 100 from Jim Schmidt in 1994. He preferred his 25 lb hammer.
The Mayer 50 came from Paul Champagne's shop last year.

I also converted my log splitter into a press.... only to find it was too big for my shop. I need to completely rearrange the shop.

I only took photos of half the shop, the rest was too messy to show. Here is the outside and better hammer photos.

I am so jealous of your shop John!

YES me too, all nice and clean.

It was clean because I had 4" of water in there late last year... I am in the process of rebuilding it , and organizing it more now , so that I don't have to move stuff to get to other stuff , which just shouldn't happen with just under 1200 sq ft. It got fresh paint , new benches and a remodeled bathroom ( though I did remove the shower ).

The plan is , when I have the AC unit on the roof of the house replaced this fall , to persuade the crane operator to place the old unit on top of the shop , where the swamp cooler used to be. 2thumbs

Here is mine

I REALLY need a mill of some kind.

I have since replace the garage door with a metal one.

Bob, you are really organized! It looks like you can actually find things in that shop. I have lost things for years in my un organized mess.

I would never get anything done if I had to search for tools all the time.

My kid makes it hard enough by leaving tools all over the yard when he works on friends cars. I found a 5 gallon bucket full of tools AND WATER.Now they are all setting in a bucket of OIL trying to loosen them up.

I just got a chance to look at my new shop all emptylike today.

12x20, double "barndoors" on one end that opens up onto a brick patio section. some (not enough) windows. The well pump and tank are in there, and the washer.

It's .... workable. I really need to extend it so I can pull together a leather room and a machining room. But right now it looks like I'll be able to curtain off the assembly/laundry area and run the main shop in the 12x10 foot main space with the doors. Wheel the forge and quench tanks out for heat treats, mount the anvil out there solidly....

I've spent most of the last two days cleaning and re-arranging my shop and it's still to messy to show any pictures of :)
