When I was in college at UC Riverside in California we had a guy in our dorm who was a bit of an umm entrepenuer? Any rate he was always coming up with schemes to make money. This was also about the time they started mothballing some of the old frigates and destroyers that were used in Korea and Vietnam.

He had this brilliant idea of all of us chipping in and buying a mothballed destroyer. I forget how much but it was seriously dirt cheap. Cheap enough for a bunch of college students to almost buy. (They were selling them at scrap price) His plan was to anchor it outside the three mile limit in international waters and turn it into a floating casino.

Not a bad plan on paper. Until he and a couple other guys went and looked at some of the destroyers. The maintenance would have been at least in the six figures and the buyer was required to deactivate and destroy all on board guns. Which was even more money.

I don't think the Navy ever sold a single one. As far as I know they are all still sitting in the San Francisco Bay.
