YOUR Shop!

Here you go. Fair warning, it's a mess. For some reason, that's the only way I can find anything.

From the entry door.

The forging area.

And the main work bench and heat treating area.

Being that this is Gene's shop (what a treat - I mean really) was it just me or did anyone else expect to see like knife angles standing around the perimeter singing?? Thanks Gene - I have seen evidence of awesomeness coming from there

This is a pic I had on my phone of the hot end of my shop. I'm still a hobby maker ( Retirement is so close!!) I am making myself do stock removal only till I get some better fit and finish skills- Forging and damascus is so much fun!! But I figure why spend a lot of time on a billet then put a less than stellar handle and guard on it! Anywhoo you guys showed yours so ... The press is one that Glen Gilmore makes about 4 miles from my house
(real reasonable shipping charges!). It was a Christmas present to myself last year. Press is awesome! I've made 3 billets so far with it and its hard to not to use it (Patience) The Knifedogs Forum is a real wealth of Info for me until covid is out of the way and I can take some classes. Thank all of you guy's that share your hard earned experience with us new makers it really helps!! Steve20200820_111700.jpg

So one thing I noticed in my own picture and many others here is a lack of a fire extinguisher in an easily accessible and obvious spot. I have one but probably have something blocking it's view, like a rag hanging on it. It's probably expired too... I suppose I should check it.

Oh I have 2 extinguishers, one near the oven and forge and one right inside the door, and any day I do any hot work I always do a check before bed at night. Kind of a firewalk, I've had 2 fires at business over 40 years! Wouldn't wish that mess on anybody!

I have a fire extinguisher and two five gallon buckets of water in the shop at all times. If you forge steel you better have something ready. You are one flying piece of hot steel away from trouble.

Until recently my shop was lacking Fire Extinguishers as well. A couple weeks back I bought four, two for the house and two for the shop. I also have a large old one that is expired but refillable. If I can find a place to refill it then I'll have three.

GREAT eye! If ya don't have 'em you better! Cheap Cheap!

Show those fire extinguishers!!!

We have about 20 of these all over the house, the shop and our cars - everyone knows how to use a spray can - works on electrical, grease, paper,

Great Little Fire Extinguisher

But you are correct - not one in an obvious spot

A tip on fire extinguisher's, if it's been sitting for a long time-which most do, turn it upside down once a year and beat the sides near the bottom with a wooden or rubber mallet. the powder inside cakes up and can effect how it operates if you need to discharge it.

I have 2 of them in my shop, visible in the last photo. I have a company that comes once a year that services those and the ones in my cabinet shop. I've been lucky and have only had to use one once when I caught the table saw on fire.
