tempering question(time sensitive)

I am Trying out heat treating today, and was just wondering if I need to put them in the oven for tempering while still hot or do I let them cool and clean them up first?

I am doing 4 sample of
5160
1080
1084
1095

I am quenching in canola oil that will be around 130 degrees

then tempering at around 400 degrees 2 times for 1 hour each time.

I quench them wash the oil off then put them in the oven. so they are room temp. when they go in the oven.

Many put them in when they can just handle them bare handed. I like to wait until they are room temp, but with some steels waiting is risky.

The safest method is to get blades into the tempering oven when they are still warm to the touch after quenching. Some steels are more tolerant of the time before temper than others....for example I once goofed up and left two 52100 blades on the bench overnight before tempering (I got called away by my Mrs., and just plain forgot about them)....in the morning I remembered them....too late. Both edges were full of tiny cracks.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I just built my little two brick forge yesterday, fired it up for the first time today.
I got to say it does get hot fast. Now I just need an anvil and a hammer!!!!

Those sure don't look like the bricks I sent you.

I also see that when you get through hardening the steel you are going to use the residual heat and cook the steaks.:haha:
I do that when I am demonstrating and we have bring your own lunch. I bring a couple of hot dogs and just before I break for lunch I have a production about making a hot dog fork. Then take it from the (gas) forge at red heat, shove the hot dogs on the tines, stick it back in the forge and out about as fast as I can. Three second hot dogs.
