Sinuous bush sword and sheath finished up

I had built this sword toward the end of summer to have on my table at the Gathering, with the intent of it going to my best friend (who has been waiting a very long time for a bush sword from me) if it didn't sell at the show. Although it got picked up a lot at the show, no one walked home with it, so I built a sheath to go with it, sharpened the top edge, and delivered it to my buddy.

Here it was post-heat treatment:

Ready for the show, top edge not yet sharpened.

And then, when I got to hand it to my buddy and get some final pics, it was, as usual, at the end of us working a long day on my family's farm, and lighting was less-than-ideal to capture it.

The sheath is molded nicely to the blade, though you sure can't tell that in this picture.

And my buddy, in appropriately dramatic pose with his new blade. He's quite happy with it. :)

Blade is approximately 16", steel is 5160, handle is an integral socket with marine-epoxy-impregnated paracord.

James (not Jeff... if you remember my youtube screwup of your name...),
the perspective of that in your friend's hand helps a lot. I was thinking full-sized sword (you know, 25" or so blade). That pic gives me the insight I was lacking to appreciate that blade. It looks like it would be just right for camping and machete work, with a lot of other stuff thrown in. I thought it was way bigger, and would have been much less useful. I really like that design, now that I understand it better.

very cool.

the gift to a friend is a great touch, always.

Kevin - The picture foreshortens it a bit, but most of my blades don't go past 18". Like you said, very handy for brush work and plenty long for fighting if it comes down to it.

Several people have asked me about how the blunt-ended chopper ended up. It got black paracord for its wrap.

James,
Whats the edge treatment on the second 1?
It almost looks like it has a Hamon, but its a bit
low and the wrong steel for a Hamon, did you do
an 'edge quench' on it? Then polish it out, or is it
hammer marks playing with the light?
Love this one, looks like it has Hard- Use, written
all over it!!! Kinda has a Persian or Arabian look to
it, very nice!

No hamon; that's the boundary of the forged texture meeting the filed bevel. :) Some blades it ends up looking somewhat like a quasi-hamon in photos.
