Simple Foldover Sheath

Time to stamp. I am sticking with easy. Going with tri-weave and a simple camo stamp for the border.

Wet the leather.

Use a wing divider set at 3/4 inch for the sides and 1/2 inch for the top of the shield. Roughly...

Draw a faint line all the way around. Faint. Very faint. We will hide it later.

I wet the leather again as it began to dry out. Can you see the faint line?

Start here.

Fill in to the left.

Finish to the right.

Not to get to detailed but this is a very easy stamp to use. It takes a bit of practice but all you do is line up the raised corners and do your best to keep the stacks going straight up the column.

I missed a picture. Stamp the first column then fill in to the left. You can see a faint line to keep the column straight in the frame entitled, start here.

Time to hide the edge. Start here and go towards the bottom of the sheath.

You can see I line up the belly of the stamp on the faint line that I created at 3/4 inch in from the edge. By stamping this way, I eliminate that faint line.

Just go from bottom of the wing to bottom of the wing to bottom of the wing. Over and over and over.

Try to keep it straight and in line.

I can finish one more step and then I need to let the leather dry out until tomorrow.

This is an edger. It will cut/shape the edge.

Push it along the edge like this.

This is called a slicker. Also called a burnisher. A good friend made me this one.

You rub it on the edges leather to compress the fibers. Like this.

I just did the top of the sheath. Should look something like this when finished.

When the shield dries out, I will dye it black. I need a break.

When you dye leather black do you dye it dark blue first and then dye over it black after the first dye dries or just go ahead and dye the leather black to start with? I've done it both ways and I'm not sure that I see the difference. What's your input?

I have heard of the blue to black trick. I have never tried it. I have always had pretty good luck with just Fiebings black. Sometimes I have done two (2) coats.
