Safety, Safety, Safety!!!

Not sure! I was wondering about that one myself. I'd like to know how it got started in the first place. I would much rather learn by someone else's mistake. I have two forges. I can't imagine either one ever going up like that.
 
This guy isn't a "fellow bladesmith"..... he had no idea what he was doing.
I saw the original report/story, this was a case of plain STUPID..... he had a huge fire in a 55 gal drum that started the disaster.

I would think that the reason he was charged with "arson" was due to how serious the incident was, and personally, I feel he should be held responsible for his actions.

The way society is these days, the only thing people will remember is that the disaster was the fault of "a bladesmith"...... which sheds a negative light on the entire knifemaking community.

Really,,, A 55gal drum. No wonder I could not imagine how that happened. I'm sorry to say I have to agree with you about making us look bad. It's like riding my Harley. We're all bad.
 
Forged in Fire strikes again...lol.

he SHOULD be held responsible...but he is NOT an arsonist. His stupidity was not malicious...
 
Wanna place bets as to was this his first blade ever?

Young guy in town informs me(yesterday..LOL) that he's going to forge a sword this summer when he gets home from college. I suppose that was my Que to say I would help him. Instead I told him to try something a bit shorter and that since I do not forge I wouldn't be much help. But if he wanted to make a stock removal blade....?

Not interested...wanna make a sword!!! Gotta be easy...right?
Cause he saw it on.....Yeah that show...lol.

Should I warn the village...?
 
This is only an hour West from me. I'm gearing up to start Forging. Now I'm paranoid. I'll be waiting for my City officials to show up and shut me down!! I plan on using a propane forge but to the powers that be I'm sure it won't matter! One STUPID GUY and everyone pays.

If I only had a nickel for every time someone said that when they were calling up asking to take a Bladesmithing class........ :)
When I tell them they are limited to no larger than a 4" blade during a basic class, they balk..... then IF they come for the class, I often hear "Wow! This is a lot harder then I thought" when they are making a 4" blade. :)

As for the yahoo who started the fire, I'm reminded of the Blade Show in Atlanta. It's been over a decade ago, but, for several years there were a couple of makers who would bring switchblades, and keep them under the table until someone asked if they had any..... and they got away with it for a few years. Then one knucklehead had a plain clothes ATF agent ask, and he pulled several switchblades from under the table...and promptly had them confiscated..... and then, the ATF went through the whole room checking ALL VENDORS for illegal knives...... gave us all a black eye.

Ya just can't fix stupid.
