I have just taken to the craft of knife making. I know less than nothing about it so I will be a long time lurker before attempting to share my opinion! Great forum.

Where in Austin are you? I'm in Cedar Park and there are a good few of us makers around. We should get together sometime.

Thanks!

I have a garage full of wood working tools but not much made specifically for metal. I have a bunch of files and scribes my grandfather used to use in his cabinet making business. I would like to eventually make knives out of some of these but in the mean time I need to know what I need to just get started.

I would like to spend between 100 and 150 bucks just on a few things to get me started- does that exist? Like a 'starter kit?' I have all the files and clamps I could ever use and my father worked for 3M for thirty some-odd years so I may be able to get some sand paper dirt cheap but would like to get the right stuff first so I kinda know where to start. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hey Wordsmith- I actually found this site thanks to your site linked from Texashuntingforum.com. I live off city park road right up the hill from ski shores. City Park is @ 2222 & 360. That drop point with the unique filing you made really peaked my interest. I fish too much (with very limited success) and I have always had an over the top love for knives so I am hoping to start spending some time in the garage with my new hobby.
