Last year while driving down the road , I noticed a guy emptying out his garage with a pile of stuff he put at the end of his driveway for local trash pick up . I couldnt help myself from stopping because I noticed a wooden desk drawer sitting on the pile. I stopped and asked the guy if he wouldnt mind if I took it and he was more than happy just for me to get it out of his yard.
For the last few years Ive been making knives for our local venison dinners for raffle so I figured Id use this piece of wood for the handle.. I dont know what kind of wood it is but I think it made a pretty nice handle to fit this knife.. Whatta ya think guys ?

I don't know what kind if wood it s Mikey but it sure turned out nice,in fact the whole knife is VERY nice and so is the sheath.
Are the squigglies from W. D. Pease? Can you explain how you apply them? I got some from him several years ago but have never used them.

Many times over the years while at people's houses, I've run across furniture that I would have loved to cut up for handles.:les: But nooooo, never what what I want.:2:

I used to stop and get water or snow skiis if they were in the trash. Good source of cheap materials. Sooner or later you have to stop bringing home junk though.

That looks awesome, I love the details behind the bolster. I would guess the wood to be walnut. Great find and save!! Funny how when you make knives. EVERYTHING starts to look like a knife handle. lol

Hey Cal, Yes I did buy them from WD Pease . I met him at a knife show one day and he had a little bag of them , so I figured Id give them a try. ( hes a great guy too ) . Anyway , I cut a piece from its strip and glued it to the back of the bolster using Loctite 326 and its primer 7649. (Theres no need to use too much of this stuff . It holds like IRON !! Really good .) I push up against the back of the squiggly and bolster using a square block, holding it there for a few seconds with some pressure. Then I use the same process to add liners or spacers of your choice. I then clamp my scales in place , drill pin holes and epoxy them in place . I also drizzle some epoxy over the squigglies to get into the little nooks and crannies. I let dry for 24hrs, grind sand , buff and polish to finsh. I think its a nice little add to the knife . As far as the wood goes ? it may be black walnut but I dont think so , The grain looks like it , but still not sure. It drilled very nice and the chips that came out of it was very waxy?? when sanding it , the paper filled up real quick almost like sanding a bar of soap. I didnt have to put anything on the wood, it shinned up real easy and it also felt like it was loaded with an oily substance of some sort .. I wish I had some more of this stuff. It still may be a type of walnut though that was inpregnated with some type of silicone or something .. I dont know.
 
Wow Mike! You may have pulled that wood out of the trash but it sure does'nt look trashy. Like the others, I have looked at furniture and with knife handle thoughts. We have a china cabinet that get's eyed all the time. If that thing ever falls over and breaks into a million pieces you might see part of it on one of my knives.
I look at stuff people pile up for the trash man all the time. I stop once in a while, but have not been lucky so far...plus I have to be careful not to fill my garage with stuff I might use someday. I could very easily become a hoarder.

You certainly have some skills there Mike, that is a very attractive knife.

That's funny Eric . I too have a few pieces in this house that I'm hoping Cody and Baylee crash into one day . ( shhhhhh ) I can say that here , she's not lookin. Lol.. I hear ya though. I'm always taking a little peek at thrown out wooden stuff too.

Thanks Steve and Jim . Always nice hearing nice things. This knife making stuff really sets in your blood. It really does. I'm always looking at woods and junk differently. Always thinking about ways to tie it into a knife.. It's a friggin sickness lol !!!
