no surface grinder

For those of us that dont have a surface grinder is there a better way to remove the scale off the steel? I hate this and often have a hard time not getting lines in the steel. This is the worst part of knife making to me. I really wish I had a surface grinder but they are so dang expensive.

A long soak in white vinegar has worked well.
Wipe the steel down often so the vinegar can work. Be careful not to get it on you, it stains like dye.

I am talking about the scale from when you get it as bar stock and it has all of those pits.

The vinegar still works wonders even on bar stock. Once you get the scale out of the way, the metal grinds much easier.

Buy ground steel, it's worth it! :)

I dont know what the price is for a bar of it, but it only costs about $120 to have a full sheet precision ground. 2 x 3 feet ;)

Aldo will grind stock for 6$ a bar, well worth it if you are doing stock removal. I think you can spec. your thickness, which must be like a dream for folder makers without a surface grinder.

That's a new one on me. I didn't know Aldo was doing that. Just another reason why Uncle Aldo is. "The Man"!
