Need advise

I make knifes not so often as a hobby by using a palmgren 2x42, angle grinder, dremel access.and dewalt portable band saw. I also have a 6x48-12"disc and 1" sanding tube sanding center by sears in which I use for mesquite to make cutting boards and shaping antler for handles on knifes etc. I have never used it for grinding or hogging off steel for flat grinding on my knifes. Being a 3hp variable it has a lot of power to shape and hog off steel instead of using my angle grinder and the 2x42. I sure would like to get the KMG but, I don't have the means to buy one. Considering that I'm just a hobby knife maker at 61 yrs of age. I need some feed back from your experience as to stay with what I have or invest in a lot money for a KMG? Rey Garza

For the money I would build one of Tracys nwg grinder i have about 400.00 in mine

That is a great piece of work Chris, and the price is good too. Thanks Rey

Rey,

Thats Jeff's build...not mine buddy. I am still trying to get my funds right to go with the NWG, or the new "Mystery Grinder" Tracy and David are working on2thumbs

Keep your eyes peeled....if your in no hurry I say wait and see what they turn out on the Mystery Grinder.

Either way, for the money you cant go wrong. Just look at Jeff's build:D

Build a NWG. Get the plans from Tracy, look them over and start dumpster diving for parts. Do what you have been doing until you get everything together.

Or better yet....Get with Wayne on one of his NWG build classes.....Well worth the money2thumbs

Grinder Workshops

Thanks for the plug Chris. Rey, If you get 10 to 15 guys together that want workshops I'll get everything together and drive way down south Texas. I haven't been down that way in quite a while.2thumbs

Great machine there Jeff, sorry Chris soon enough we will both build us a NWG or wait for the mystery grinder. Does anyone know if someone can build me an NWG with the motor, 10"wheel+ platen attachment, question is how much + shipping to Mission, Texas?.

Thanks Wayne for the offer but, down here we don't have many knife makers or interested in the craft. If I did I would and round up the crews in no time. But, see if you all can come down south texas some time, you all are welcome and have some good BBQ and fajitas smooched beans and mex, rice cole slaw, potato salad, spicy habanero chili sauce, oh! did not mean to get off the subject. Just good old hospitality from my home state of Texas. Hey Wayne how about if you could make me one of KMG's with all the works, let me know. Rey 956-222-6567 or someone you may know, thanks. Rey

Rey, I have been having requests for kits with all the parts so I am probably going to do that. I will have to write up an instruction sheet. The cost would be the same as attending a workshop and I would be available for telephone help if it is needed. There are earlier posts by me about the workshops so look at them and the brochure that is attached there. You could call me or send me a PM for any specific questions. The grinders that I have been building have an 8" wheel and a 2" wheel so that you can have the 8" or 2" contact wheel out front or have the slack belt or flat platten (similar to the pictures that Tracy has for the Mystery Grinder). I have not built one for the 10" wheel but don't think that would be a problem. I am also working on wiring the motor so that it will run in either direction (I use this feature for sharpening as with a paper wheel). This has really improved my sharpening.
I will be posting soon about the kit deal.
I can also build a grinder finished and ready for you to plug in a go to work (no assembly required. The cost for my usual build is $1,300.00 plus shipping. Or you can pick it up at the Blade Show.
