I'm kind of a lurker but here we go:
From the start over two months ago.
Out of heat treat from Paul Bos, who is just down the road
from me. It is D2 at 59-60 Rockwell. Along side is a Loveless
inspired drop-point with tapered tang, there is a story there too but
that I'll wait to post when that one is finished. The DP is for my
father's 60th birthday and I'm late.
Here I try out my first cutting project. I used a little 1x32 Delta
sander with 600, 800, and leather belt to put on a convex edge. It
doesn't feel or look that sharp but I've got a bald spot on my arm
where it shaves. It is my first go round with a convex grind blade of any kind.
I'm not sure I love the micarta but it was cheap and a good place to
start. It has some 'character' in the layers that I was not expecting
from looking at other micarta handle knives.
Some lessons I learned:
Probably should have just bought an Ingram. Now I've started and this could get expensive (too late it is already cutting into my gun money.)
Read the order form not the belt to confirm the grit of the belt. A45
is not 45 grit but 400 and 4 hours to profile a blade is too long.
I'm a slow learner I guess.
Buy the best belts they make life better. The "Gator" belts are SO nice to work with and forgiving.
Thanks for looking
