We have a need to have a reference thread on where to get free software to remove or prevent virus, adware, malware and so on.

We also need some links and suggestions for free other software like picture processing, picture hosting, etc.

Post what you got...Help a dog out...:running dog:

I'll start.

A great free photo processing program is called GIMP and can be found at http://www.gimp.org/

If you have a lot of images and a pretty good viewer try IRFANVIEW you can get it here: http://www.irfanview.com/
This program will help you view and organize your pictures. It even has some editing ability but if you want to edit photos go with GIMP.

It is not free, But a valuable resource should your computer have windows software, driver problems, viruses or malware. This company will scan your computer free of charge, they will find any corrupted files, viruses or malware or outdated drivers of the hardware that is affecting performance. Once scanned, IF you choose to have it fixed, they will sell you a repair key code. Once you plug in the code. They delete any problematic or corrupted files with a exact copy of the original file. They have hundreds of thousands of files in their database and I know it is safe and a quick repair. Should the automatic repair not work, they will schedule a remote session and manually find out what the problem is. I had three computers giving various problems. My own son is a computer engineer and writes hardware and software manuals for companies. He could not repair any of the three. Two out of the three were fixed automatically, one required the remote session. It was an old laptop that the wireless card would not connect and the touch pad did not work at all. I had to use a regular mouse on the laptop. I had bought three repair keys and used them all successfully.
The company was highly recommended by Sunbelt software. The name of the program and company is Reimage.com
Take a look at their site and fix your own computer, much cheaper than having a geek come to your house or taking it into a shop for software or other problems.
Good Luck,
Jim

AVG + firefox is a good combo against ad ware and spy ware.

Web site building - PostNuke is a cool php program (free) that many web host have available for quick install, it's a good way to build a web site, you can get free theme's or pay a little bit for a nice custom theme.

Picasa is a photo album that has a number of features including a simple editing app for photos that are close but could use a little tweaking or cropping. It even has a web album where you can store photos and share with friends etc. You could even post photos on the forums by linking to them in your posts. It can be downloaded from http://picasa.google.com/.

Anti-vir anti-virus free, daily annoying popup, rated very well by testers of such programs.

Another vote for Picasa, I have other picture editors but mostly use it for editing and organizing on my machine.

Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware

I think this is BY FAR the BEST anti-virus program if you need to remove a virus. The free version allows virus scanning and removal. I can scan my whole computer in about 4 hours, versus 16 hours with McAfee. I haven't used the paid version, but I am VERY tempted to buy it and replace McAfee for slowing my computer down every time I scan, startup, or just whenever McAfee feels like using up my CPU.

Another program for those who are more tech-savvy is Sandboxie. Sandboxie allows you to create a "sandbox" that you can have programs run/install/download to that if a virus were to appear, you can simply erase the box and it's gone. (It's sort of like a virtual PC) I have bought the full version, because with it, I can also use free trials multiple times. The free version only allows one sandbox, but the full allows unlimited.

Here is CNet's great download site. Everything from free to purchase software for ANY application or utility you can think of.

This is the anti virus I've used for 5 or 6 years. It's the free version of AVAST and it works great. Just have to re register it each year.

And I HIGHLY recommend that everyone download Mozillia Firefox and disable everything you can on IE 8. It is WAY more secure. It's not just a shell that works on top of MS Explorer. It is stand alone and a lot less easy to attack than IE. Plus a GREAT built in popup blocker.

Ashampoo FireWall is the firewall I use and it works pretty good as well. Takes a little knowledge to use, but it's not too bad. No, I don't use Microsoft firewall. I turn it off. ;~)

Just thought of another that I've used. Posted it in the other thread, so I thought I'd post it here too:

One thing I've used multiple times on different PCs is Combofix. It's a very simple program that you can use to correct some system issues. I only use it as a last resort, because it messes with system stuff and that could screw up the computer, but it gets rid of some deeply hidden bugs.

I like to keep combofix on a flash drive, because a virus that I had to remove with it would not allow it to download from the internet.

I need to create a rescue jump drive with a load of utilities. I just haven't gotten to it yet.
