John Wilson's KITH WIP - folder COMPLETE

I guess I need to start one of these for the 2018 KITH. I know it's maker's choice, but I'd rather make something somebody would want to have. I feel like my best work is kitchen knives, but I am also making slipjoints now which is pretty fun.

Does anybody have a preference?

EDK, every day kitchen knife, when i comes time to fix supper, the first knife you pick up. for me, the 8" chef's knife and 6" cleaver are on the sidelines, the 4" to 5" EDK does most of the work.
This is true... BUT... slipjoint, slipjoint, slipjoint!!! If you are making them, I’d bet my bottom dollar that they’re awesome.

Thanks Ted, but especially with slipjoints I’m no Craig Brewer or John Doyle or Calvin Robinson or Don Robinson.... although I cannot express my gratitude enough for Don Robinson’s book “Slipjoints My Way”.

Here is my latest, still a work in progress. It is a Don Robinson “Whittler” design. Blade and spring are AEBL. I made the scales from African Kudu horn.

Still has a bit to go.

Top marks for the kudu horn to emphasise how special a hand made pocket knife can be.

Thank you very much!

This is my first time using horn. I didn’t take a picture of the back for some reason, but the bolsters are dovetailed to capture the horn should it decide it wants to curl. It is also anchored down with GFlex expoxy.

Thus the man says, yet when you see the photos, one realises that he's not a total greenfoot either..
It looks stunningly good, John. I'd be happy to take that off you, should you need to rid yourself of that one..

Very kind words, Johan.

If I may ask, John. How did you do the nail Nick?

I used a Dremel cutoff wheel, chucked up into the drill chuck of my mini-mill. With the blade in the vise I feed the blade into the cutter .005 at a time and run the cross slide left to right, advance .005 and run back the other way, advance .005 and back to the right again- you get the idea. I cut the slot .040 deep by the time it's done. (the blade is .110 thickness)
