I have a problem a wood addiction problem

Most handle material starts out of big pieces. I can't hold it against the guy he makes a living off of making and selling some of the nicest stocks around. When I shot skeet a few guys had his hand fit stocks. Each 1 was in the 5 to 7 thousand dollar range. And I also can feel his pain. Every time I see Koa pen turning blanks I want scream. Seriously it's a pen... You can get one at the bank for free.;)

Pic of the day. Dyed box elder burl.

Hopefully some other people start to post some wood. This is starting to show how bad my problem really is!

I know I have posted this before because I have the same sickness and many people would question the sanity of a person who goes to the lengths I do to secure beautiful knife scales. Such as traveling all the way to Scotland to secure a source of the Wych Elm Burl that I have posted below of purchasing a $400 Walnut gun stock blank on the off chance of getting 8 - 10 killer sets of knife scales. I can't tell you how crazy my wife thinks I am for spending the money I do on what she calls "wood". Anyway, here is my contribution to the discussion:

That is some good looking stuff. The bottom left burl looks awesome. I know you said that you might post some for sale. I sure might be interested in purchasing some.

Hahaha!! Here's that wood I was talking about. I'm thinking pen blanks for sure.....lol

This stuff is true California Claro Walnut. About 40 years ago dad would go to the Pomona gun show every year and buy a blank or three from an old gentleman named "slim" Swenson...he was harvesting this stuff from northern Cali where he lived. He's saw it and dry it and bring a trailer load down every year. Dad always told me buying wood is like money in the bank....he was right as usual. Only one had the price on it...$75.00...I doubt dad paid that. He would wait till the end of the show and ask Slim what he didn't want to take home. I know at one time he had at least 20 of these....I ended up with 5 and don't know what he did with the rest. maybe traded away for Model-70 actions....he had multiple addictions....LOL.

Guys...these photos seriously do not do this wood justice!

I have two more like it in the basement. I don't think dad would mind me cutting these into knife handles. He was a good stock maker, metal worker, and LOVED custom knives.

Here's a few pieces of walnut I'm in the process of drying. Mostly crotches.

Some have a coat of polyurethane on to slow the drying to prevent cracking.

Gene...between that spalted maple and the walnut...there'll be a bunch of beautiful knives. That walnut crotch is amazing!

Ted those stock blanks are amazing. The curly one on the left... I have never seen walnut like that. Making knives is something that I am new at. Shooting has been a passion of mine for the last 20 years. I don't think that is something you see any more. Anything that figured on a firearm is generally from the 70's or earlier.

Mail call..... Did I ever mention that John Doyle is a bad influence. If not I should have.
Koa and Mango in the rough and not yet stabilized.

You mean there is not supposed to be wood stashed all over the shop in dark dry places?
Hi my names Walt and I too have a wood addiction.
Whats worse is I have a friend who works at a flooring store and drops off a milk crate of 5.5" + long pieces of oak, tigerwood, and Acacia every 2 months. Lol

Walt, that block has some nice figure to it. I bet it will look really nice on a chef.

Curly maple seems to be the wood that really catches my eye. I have more than this. It's in board form uncut for handles. I bought it so my Dad could try his hand at stabilizing. Both boards are to green to cut or stabilize.

Desert ironwood. This is big a set of scales. .387x 1.7x 6.1 I might have to save these for a camp knife.

The comedy is the two sides are full of birds eyes, nope she wants the waves.

Justin, you could take some of those wedges and glue them together with a strip of g10,brass,copper,stainless between them for some new looking handles.
