Am planning to create a pocket knife. No nothing, but am eager to learn. Have done welding and woodworking. I read that I need to read everything I can before starting. Found a list of books on this website. I would like to know how to get started. Do I buy steel in bars or are they cut out in knife shapes? I would rather start from scratch :bud:but if a kit is a good starting place, whatever. Any information from others who started like myself would be appreciated.

Welcome to the pack Mal.

You have several different options. You can go the more difficult path and design and build your own 100% from scratch, or you can look into one of the folder kits which has everything pre-cut. Though I have yet to build a folder, I think I would take the kit route. It's still going to be a hard path, but a bit less difficult one.

There are several sources out there if you are looking for a folder kit, but most Knife Dogs check out Knife Dog's founder, Tracy Mickley's site first. You'll find that he is extremely competitive with other knifemaking supply sites and usually much less expensive with the #1 customer service in the industry. Here is a link to his site and a direct link to his folder kits.

I second Murph's suggestion. I have built many primitive folders but wouldn't think of building a modern folder without trying a kit first. There's a lot of little things to know that a kit would help you with. Have fun :)

Hi Mal. Yes you need to read all you can. If possable find a maker near you and ask if he will give you some pointers I met an old maker tought me a lot in a short time. I am a fitter, that helped alot. You bing a welder should help. You can try a kit to get a feel for assemly. But you will wat ot build one from scrach .I would start with a liner lock.
