Etching... another mystery

hey dogs,

I etch or coat most of my knives

Kind of like the look of an etched or coated blade (and it helps to hide scratches :eek: )

Anyway I saw this etch the other day and was wondering how it´s done.



Well I know that first of all to get the blade gray you have to etch it

So I´m pretty sure that´s what the maker of this blade did.
But then come the lines...

I know that he applies them by hand what I don´t know is how

If I dip a small piece of wood in acid and try it it looks like someone drew lines on the blade and far from cool

Any ideas or suggestions on how i could get a similar look?

You can get lines like that on Titanium by using spray glue.

It could be that the maker cold blued the knife, spray glued the handle and then etched the bluing off then removed the glue.

Off the top of my head that is one guess.
 
Gonna guess that it is some type of powder coat process or screened on pattern or a computer generated laser etching..but the same could be hade by using some spray crackle paint,then maybe etch using the paint as a resist,deep etch then remove the resist darken in the etching then lightly etch the knife handle..

Spray on some of that "crackle coat" paint, let it "crackle" and then etch (or whatever) for the darker pattern in the cracks. Then, just acetone to take off the paint.....

That's my guess anyways.

In sign making we spray paint a color then wad up a crinkly plastic bag and blot the surface. The resulting patterns look just like these.

He could be using paint as an etch mask in the same way.
