Edge Quench Tank

Yesterday , one of my guys needed some welding done on our Cat 908 bucket.. So I cut a few plates , welded them in place and made the repair.
The shop has been quiet this winter so being that I had some scraps of 3/16 plate by the welding bench , I started welding stuff together. No one could have pulled me away from the bench. I was on a mission . ( Ya know when you start something and you get in that zone ? Well I was in the zone . ) I was welding pieces together and I made myself a new edge quench tank ..

OL 15"
Depth 4"
Width 6"

I made a removeable plate . Im gonna fill the oil to about 1/4 " above the plate to do my quenching.

Oh yeah , I did fill it with my parts washer solvent for an hour or so and it doesnt leak .

I needed this like a hole in the head . Like there was something really wrong with my 2 dollar steel pan that Ive been using forever .. What can I tell ya , Sometimes a guy just has to do what he has to do. lol !

Thanks for looking.

I can't see why you would need to change from the old pan, I can take the new on off your hands if you like:). Nice job on the welding, I assume your a welder?

Built like a tank there Mike.
If edge quenching dries up for you, I see a future in making Habachis. (if anyone remembers what they are). There's nothing like making the tools to make a knife. Sometimes I spend more time on that than the blades. Nice work.

Hey Brad I think I'll keep this one , but I can gladly send you the pan.lol. I've been welding for over 25 years , I just buttered this one up. I had o make a few passes in certain spots to stop some minor leaks. I guess I can lay a nice bead when I have to. Thanks man.

Rudy, yes it's built like a tank, and trust me , I just kept addin stuff to this thing, like the feet , the side rails, then the handle, but the paint is cool. It's that sparkle stuff. And yes I remember the habachis.. Lol. Thanks bro.

That thing rocks!!!! you guys have to stop filling my head with all these ideals my wifes not to happy with all the shop time i am putting in LOL :)

Its funny you asked that . When I was building this thing I didnt have it all planned out in my head . I was just welding up plates and as I was welding I talked myself into making this " Quench Tank ". After the body of the tank was made , I wasnt gonna put a lid over the top of it , because I was too lazy to run out and buy some hindges. So I figured Id weld a few pieces of rebar on the sides of it just to pick it up and move it around ( handles ) . Just As I was welding in the last weld of the rebar , I ran out of wire on my mig. I walk over to the cabnet where I have my welding supplies and various junk and right in front of me there was a blister pack of two hindges. At that point there was no turning back , I had to put a roof over this thing using those hindges and I made up my own carring handle .. Thats the truth . Thats the story behind the rebars.. Im laughing here writing this because my mechanics in the shop here were asking the same exact thing. Nice pick up .
