Cutting Titanium ?

This has probably been asked here, more than once.:les:
What is the best way for the best way,for the average man,
with average tools to cut titanium?I cut my first ever liners
out a little while ago,with a dremel.
Just wondering if there is a better way.

God bless,Keith

I use my metal cutting band saw,I keep a blade just for Ti as it tends to knock a tooth off occasionally.

+1 on what Stan said. I use my band saw, with a dedicated 18 or 24 TPI blade......I personally like the 8% cobalt blades....especially for Ti.

I use a wood cutting bandsaw and friction cut my ti. Your saw just has to move pretty fast

Thanks guys, all I have is a bandsaw for wood.
Jay,how do you friction cut it ?{sounds a little scary}

God bless,Keith

I have an old wood band saw that runs pretty fast, a minimum of 3000 FPM is what is needed to friction cut. Any blade on the saw will work i use a wore out 14 TPI blade (I have even heard some people will just mount the blade backwards so the blunt edge is cutting). You just turn it on and start cutting. It just slides right through the Ti. I have not ever cut Ti any other way so i cant compare it but i dont thik its very scary just a little loud. I hope this helps.
Thanks

Yes I also as Jay mentions have friction cut TI using a wood cutting bandsaw and a blade put on backwards. Its probably not real good on the thrust bearing, so next time I will probably sand off all my teeth and try it that way.
ANyway the friction or heat will start the cut, once cutting dont stop until you are all the way through or you will have a hard time getting it to start again. Once cutting it cuts pretty darned fast. I would guess about 3 inches a second or so.
I have only done this once or twice several years ago but it worked like a champ.

I had a good bi-metal blade that was dull,so after listening
to you guys,I thought I would give it a try.
I cut out 10 liners in less time than it took to cut out 1 with
the Dremel.
Thanks,

God bless,Keith
