Bladeshow 2021

Most makers don't mind if you take pics, just ask first! I had a pretty good show, sold enough to cover all my expenses and that's all that really matters to me. I had the honor of being surrounded by awesomeness. Brian sellers beside me...Cody hofsommer and Jordan lamothe across from me. All of them were more than happy to critique my work and tell me things I did good and things that I could have done better. Being my first year with a table I learned a lot...now I will be better prepared next year :)

Jordan is awesome!! I had the opportunity to take a class he ran earlier this year! He's a first class act, and unbelievably talented!

I felt kind of weird Taking pictures of others’ work. I have been to blacksmith festivals where pictures are frowned upon and some people get down right rude about it. I was not sure how it would be received at blade. I would have liked to take some pictures though.

Funny you should say that. I was at a Safari Club Intl show and was just casually taking pictures of the awesome guns (some were $400,000.00) and one guy jumped at me and grabbed at my phone. He started yelling at me about no pictures. Actually tried to take my phone. I'm 6'4" and I said "no". I said if you don't want pictures, try putting up a sign. Most were fine about it and were flattered. I'd imagine knifemakers to be much the same.

Exactly. A stranger trying to take my property from my hand will cause a physical altercation to ensue. I avoid it by not taking pictures.
 
Had a great time at Bladeshow. Didn't get a lot of pictures because I was too busy spending money. Got to meet a couple of Knife Dog members. J. Hoffman and Jeremy Bartlett. Very good to talk to those guys for a couple of minutes. International knife makers were down this year about 100 tables due to the Covid mess. Material vendors were also down a little this year but overall still a great show.

My youngest son usually goes with me to Bladeshow. We've made it a Father/Son trip the last few years. He couldn't go this year because his baseball team was playing for the state championship. Unfortunately they lost so I took my little brother. He had never been to a MLB game before and I had tickets to the Braves and Dodgers on Saturday night. I got a big kick out of watching him watching the game.

here's what I don't get....guns...like knives...are customized by the talent of the maker. Even custom made stuff from the ground up. So if you don't want something copied you can just never make anything and keep all the amazing stuff you would make inside your head.

Point is...the first time it's out there....it's out there. Most of us "handy" guys do not need a pic to figure out the "how" of something...we take pics to drool over the "how well" of something....and that's individual. Most of us can spot work from our favorite makers without getting close enough to see their mark. Execution is what we're after! Most of us have plenty of ideas....we want to know how to make it better!

So I just don't get freaking out over pics...All a pic of good work does is raise the bar. Any ideas I have inadvertently stolen at shows I did without a camera...and I've been going to the Pasadena show since I was 9....(starting 50 yrs ago) well before digital cameras...lol!

I'm sorry to hear about that behavior, I've had a table at the Tampa bay chapter Safari Club fundraiser for years and never heard of any folks having problems taking photos. you have more patience than me, if that guy laid even a finger on me it would have been on, any probably ruin the evening for a lot of people.
That being said, I've done a lot of knife shows over the years and really never heard of any problem taking pictures, obviously asking a maker first.
but if someone were to stroll up, take a picture and just walk away I certainly wouldn't get upset about it, I would just figure the guy was some sort of oddball.
you may have just run into a someone who thought he was some sort of big shot and trying to get attention.

This was at the SCI show in Reno. It was actually a sizeable gun manufacturer. Not a recognizable name, but they had a sizeable area with chairs, displays etc. I was mainly taking pics for my father in law so he could see the guns. If he had been polite about it, I would have completely understood and deleted the photos, but he wasn't and I didn't.

If he had actually tried to take my phone or get physical he would have discovered his ability to fly through the air.

We will definitely be doing our best to make Blade show a yearly trip now. I regret not meeting any of y’all. It kinda got so overwhelming in there and I had no signal to coordinate a meeting place on Knifedogs. Had a great time though!

Might be a good idea for next year to set up a time and place for all Knife Dogs to meet.
