Maybe I should not run so much water in mine and I would use it more! You make a great point, it probably doesn’t need that much and then it won’t be so messy. Those things are awesome on thin blades
This thread was my Christmas list this year! Mister, tubing, 10gal HF compressor, and the concentrate liquid stuff. Just need to get a water bucket and hook everything up!! I will probably add the foot switch, too!
I actually bought a cheap setup from Temu to round an order out. I havnt set it up yet though! Just to many things going on right now! I wanted to do this mostly for my SS knives. They are all heat treated and are a PITA to reheat treat if I over heat the tip especially!
Ya'll gonna really like a mister - but the footswitch is really needed. It cuts down on amount of water and air used. Even a small air compressor can keep up using the foot switch, and much less water wetting the area down.
Found the foot pedals with the air hose connections! Is the momentary one better than the one that you push to start and push to stop or more of a personal preference thing?
Perhaps it's a personal preference, but I do think I prefer the momentary pedal so I hold my foot on pedal while grinding, and release by removing foot. Helps with amount of air used (important with a small air compressor) and less water for less mess. Is this one on Amazon the pedal you found? I've been happy with it.
Yeah, I got a 10 gallon compressor, so it's not huge! Foot pedal came in yesterday, but I have my 4th 3rd shift in 6 days tonight, so I can't play with stuff until Thursday. Got a bunch of stuff in the shop for Thursday, though, so it may be a while until I get to play with this!
I picked up a pair of gallon jugs with large openings so I can fill up the gallons and swap lids if needed, too. Figured 2 gallons should take me through most of my grinding sessions!
I just got a foot switch thanks to you Ken I think I'm gonna like this. Also I'm trying out some dual nozzle misters from China that work perfect with the foot switch. Will try for a video soon
I agree with you Ken. I recently added a misting system and wondered why I didn't do this sooner. It is much easier to control the heat, especially as you mentioned on thinner knives. It also seems like using coolant is a machining standard for the most part.
I have the exact same set up, probably the same one off Amazon. A foot pedal is now on my 'upgrade' list.
I am still working in the cold so I'd like to find or somehow concoct a coolant that won't freeze. Everything I've thought of is flammable and I hesitate to try.
Another reason I added a mister is so I can keep experimenting with working stone.
Luke, you're just too far north for me when you have to worry about the misting water freezing up. It's in the 60's F here today, New Year's day. My kind of "Winter" weather. That's why I'm South of I-10 interstate hwy.
Can someone link the foot switch?? I probably won't get to this until forge is done but at least I'll have the switch! Time is at a premium right now! Taking forever to do things!! Lucky if i get a day to do knife related stuff! Still trying to do something everyday no matter how small! LOL!!
