How to square up a odd shaped knife handle.

Excellent idea! That is thinking way outside the box and I will be using this soon with some elk antler I have that really wants to be used on as a handle.

    Christmas

    Questions about a foredom

Neat trick Laurence! I think I have a couple extra of those sleeve for my spindle sander and will be giving this a try!

    Questions about a foredom

That is the exact one I got for the same money. Not a bad deal all in all with what I wanted. Here are the sanding drums I mentioned, they don't last very long and buying them from a big box store like Lowes for $5 for 4 isn't a good deal...

    Questions about a foredom

It looks like from the pics of the real Foredom links you have the first one isn't reversible. I recently bought the Jewerels kit one from Amazon. The price was better than any of the ones I found on Ebay. One thing that I use most often are the small sanding disks. I bought packs of 100 of...

Warped a blade...I'm sweating it now

Nice looking blade. Why the narrow tang? I like a large tang. Make sure when you file for the guard fit you use a round file against the tang if you leave it squared off it will be a stress riser. Good luck finishing this one and post pics when you get her done.

Warped a blade...I'm sweating it now

After you quench the blade you have a short window of opportunity to straighten it. When all the color is gone from the blade in the quench you have reached around 900 degrees. At that point, assuming you missed the pearlite nose and will have a hard blade but, the blade isn't hard yet there...

    contact wheel

An 8" wheel would work just fine for profiling. And should you want to give hollow gringing a try it would be a good size wheel to learn on and do great for smaller knives.

Profiling recommendations for a new guy

I use the wheel to get as much of it profiled as possible then swith to the platten. One thing you can do is put a cermic glass liner on your platten. I have used one for several years and there is almost no wear visible on it. USA knifemaker dot com sells them.

Nice looking mill! It should do everything you ask of it.

New guy, probably not a new mistake (HT)

1084 being fairly forgiving in heat treat will make a decent knife as long as you get above non-magnetic. Where ever your file is biting could mean there is a layer of decarb that needs to come off or it didn't get hard. I used a single brick forge for my first couple and had passable results...

    May Be WIP... ...Ned Help...

Hey George bring them to the fall hammer in at Haywood. I'm sure David will hook you up with a welder to weld a handle on then you can use a forge to get it hot and use the big blue to flatten it. Without a power hammer or press the only way to flatten it is by hand and that is a task I...

Official Summer 2013 KnifeDogs Knife in the Hat Thread

I hate it but I'm out too. I over did the slot for the tang and it shows after shaping the ferrule and I don't have enough time to get another handle on it.

Normalizing - how far to cool

I only take it to black which somewhere around 900 degrees. By that time all of the new grain boundries have formed and not much can be gained by waiting until you can touch it.
