Questions about a foredom / looking for advice

Well after many years of faithful service I think I finally burnt down my little dremel!:2: So I am thinking of an upgrade to a foredom. However I don't know a lot about them except the foredom brand is supposed to be the best. I have done a search on Ebay and found out there are many different ones to choose from.

Here is a couple of Foredom Brand:

Here is a generic brand:

So can anyone give me some advice on a foredom, I am not sure what to look for when buying??????????:les: Just maybe Santa can be talked into one!:what!::31::3:

I have the top one #) with the foot pedal and the keyed chuck.

I have used it hard with carbide burrs for over 13 years now and have only replaced the brushes and the cable once.

Whichever model you get, don't get the collet hand piece. The keyed chuck is must faster and easier to swap out bits.

Also, only cry once. Get the real deal Foredom machine.

It looks like from the pics of the real Foredom links you have the first one isn't reversible. I recently bought the Jewerels kit one from Amazon. The price was better than any of the ones I found on Ebay. One thing that I use most often are the small sanding disks. I bought packs of 100 of them also on Amazon for cheap.

OK got to ask why would you want reverseable, I hadn't really thought about that??????????

I went back to the list and answered my own question!

QUOTE: The great feature of this motor is its reversibility. Alternating motor direction is useful in symmetrical grinding and carving, extends the life of some abrasives, speeds up and facilitates metal polishing, and helps to keep dust and grindings flying away from right-handed users. Left-handed users have more control of the cutting tool when the motor is in reverse mode. The all new, 1/6 HP ball bearing motor has 33% more power than its predecessor - added power that minimizes stalling or slowing under load.

After doing a little research I am thinking about this one,

http://www.amazon.com/Foredom-2230-...sr=8-1&keywords=Foredom+K.2230+Flex+Shaft+Kit.

The deals all come, some with shipping and some without but, no matter how you add it up. The best price I can get including shipping seems to be $235.00 give or take a few pennies. I was hoping to get it delivered for $200.00 but don't look like that is going to happen! Ba Humbug, I will have to think on this a little more!

That is the exact one I got for the same money. Not a bad deal all in all with what I wanted. Here are the sanding drums I mentioned, they don't last very long and buying them from a big box store like Lowes for $5 for 4 isn't a good deal.

These are not as good a quailty as the real dremel ones but for the money you can't beat them!

Barry,
Here is a trick for those sanding sleeves! I go to Sears or any wood working supply and get the 1/2" x 6" long sanding tubes for the oscillating sanders, the come in three grits usually. Cut an over length sized piece with a jewelers saw.

They will kind of turn into a foot ball shape when you tighten them down and work much better in longevity and you don't go oh, S$&T as much because the tapered ends let you feed into the grind cut much better.

I have done lots of handle sculpting with this set up. If this Foredom ever burns out I will upgrade to the reverse-able model like you have.

Neat trick Laurence! I think I have a couple extra of those sleeve for my spindle sander and will be giving this a try!

Foredom has a lot of "models" in fact many are the same with a different hand piece and have the same smaller than others they sell horsepower. Those machines are not near the quality that the larger horse power ones are. I'm saying the best use you will get is from one of those. I know because I have owned both. Frank

Wise choice.
I hang my Foredom by a cable that over an air/heating duct in my shop at just the right height for me.

Hey thanks guys for the info. Lawrence this model ain't got a hanger. The model with the hanger is about $20.00 more. I guess it's the cheap in me but heck I can make a hanger for less than $20.00 bucks!:p
