What's going on in your shop?

Howdy guys. I’ve been MIA for some time. Actually been wrapped up in building some firearms, machining 80% receivers & some parts the last 2 years. I’d post some pics of the sick rifles/pistol I’ve build, but this is a knife forum… I just need to split my time, LOL. But just before, here’s the...

    Aviation tools for knife making...

I just use pins... Corbys... bolts... whatever I have that’ll work, but Clecos are a good idea for some things. They are only for thin materials though. I don’t really do much in the sheet metal thickness range of projects.

Caber mod. 13 Italian drill press

Solid little bench drill there..nice. Yeah, I’d say it’s better than the trusty CHINESIUM drill presses we all know & love, LOL!

Some ‘Smith logic I’m speaking on.

Thank you for that Smallshop. And once again... for the record.... I never thought of this as a “Forging vs Stock Removal” thread. OTHERS brought that aspect in....NOT ME! Certain members are putting words in my mouth. If THEY had bothered to read my entire OP (which I believe you did), they...

Some ‘Smith logic I’m speaking on.

Ok, I deleted all but my OP & response to Ken. Everything else is in its place. Nothing I said in the OP was a personal attack... as many of your “MOB” posts were. But I no longer see your angry content. Only Ken’s post is left. So it was productive. Showed me those I want nothing to do with...

Some ‘Smith logic I’m speaking on.

I see your point Ken. And if anyone is thinking that, please let me say the Forging vs Stock removal was not part of my thinking during writing. It’s as you said Ken..thank you. I just think “Myth & Legend” should remain in the fiction side of things. Example: I watched videos many years ago &...

Some ‘Smith logic I’m speaking on.

This has been on my mind quite some time. I think most know, but I’ll say just in case. I’m not a Smith. I have use of only my right arm/hand..my left being 100% paralyzed. And while I’ve given it a thought, just more problematic tool than I’d like to dabble in. I’m a knife Maker. I’m not an...

3/4" wide X 3/16" thick high carbon steel....

Why not grab a piece of .187”x1.5” and cut the length in half? I’ve never come across 3/4” except for special cut..which always incurs a fee.

    VFD/Motor Questions

Ahh, you got Ameribrade’s version2 grinder. Nice. It’s odd they didn’t go this route from the start. And they still sell the tube steel version.(bet it’s the left overs they have) But I can’t imagine they are selling them. Excellent grinder. Still overpriced to me though. But, I’m a builder so...

    Newbie questions.

Bed frame steel?? Huh? Do not buy bed frames and cut them up for the steel. Seriously! If you want JUNK mystery steel, any no name file or saw blade can help you out. Bed frame steel?? Or.... you can continue doing what you are already doing...buying KNOWN, decent quality steel from online...

    apply scales w/ C/A glue ?

I’m skeptical. There is a reason 2-part is as strong as it is! I am nervous about it anyway. I’ve used only Corby bolts & 2-part for many years now. And I did so much research looking for the *perfect 2-part epoxy. I started using Devcon, 2Ton then switched to System Three T-88, as it’s a Marine...

Should I save swarf? (question for the canister damascus folks)

Yeeeeup! No good. Will only make junk steel. Reason why you’ve never seen it.

    Knifemaker's Vise....

You’d like three hands, huh? LOL.... I’d be STOKED if I had TWO!! But I make do with One... Not too bad I guess. I did teach everyone to Home build the SGA after all. :) DO NOT buy one of these...please!! They are so incredibly easy to make! Remember you are a Knife Maker! Honestly, as...

    VFD/Motor Questions

Alway, always go 220 with anything over 1hp (750watts). A 2hp motor is not running full 2hp with 110v. I run a 1.5hp on 220v, and I haven't stalled it once with the most pressure I’ve put on it. I’m sure I could, but it would require an effort to do it on my part.

    End mills

I can usually find a deal on whatever size I need via Amazon. Here’s a Speed Tiger Carbide for under $13. https://www.amazon.com/SPEED-TIGER-Carbide-Square-Mill/dp/B07FSLDRZF/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=5%2F16+end+mill&qid=1600528996&sprefix=5%2F16+end&sr=8-4 If I can get away with HSS, I...
