Need help....I need a Ranger stencil.

Just a suggestion. Maybe a scroll from his Ranger Battalion would be more fitting. Jake

Help with heat treat oven math

Ok. I finally took my janky heat treat pottery kiln apart. I'm building a heat treating oven using the fire bricks from the kiln. All of the controls are wired up, PID, K type thermocouple, SSR's ext. I figured out how to program the PID. So my new oven is fairly small with the interior...

    Speeding up hand sanding

Well I finally tried the oil out. I used Mobil 1 and it really cut good. No pictures. I forgot the phone in the shop. But I will use the oil for hand sanding from here on out. Thanks. Jake

Great tips. I'm going to try this out. Jake

    Filing Jig

Looks good so far. Maybe a pillar file will help to get the plunge lines started. A pillar file is parallel along the sides. Jake

I WILL completely finish this one!

That looks really good. I'm sure you'll do good on the sheath. Jake

    Noob mistakes don't be afraid.

The latest noob mistake. In an effort to even my bevels i some how pushed back my plunge line about an 1/8". Oops. At least the bevels are some what even. I drilled the pin holes for some stainless steel tubing. Some how a larger drill bit found itself in my pin drawer and I drilled the holes...

"My very first knife" - post up!

Here's my first knife. I made it about eight or nine years ago. I hand filed the bevels and took it to my Dad to heat treat it. The blade is 440c stainless and the handles are a piece of Claro walnut with aluminium tubes for pins. Also my first kydex sheath. I carry it in my coat pocket while...

Things I have learned about grinding and Finish Sanding

This is a great post. Thanks again. I discovered trying to grind while tired or really not feeling into it the grinding suffers. It's just easier to put the balde down and find something else to do for a while.I have two blades I started yesterday and the bevels were turning out pretty good. I...

    O1 Prototype. Quick and Dirty

Thanks again LRB. I have been looking at the Steel Barons site. I was about to place an order then my septic system backed up. So I'll have to wait a bit. Jake

    O1 Prototype. Quick and Dirty

Thanks Ty. LRB I now intend to get some 1080 or some steel similar to use in my forge. For my O1 blades I'm going to take them to my Dad. He's a semi retired knife maker with the proper heat treating equipment. Thanks for your comments. Jake

Using Wooden Pins for Knife Handles

I used bamboo skewers once. They weren't perfectly round and left gaps around the holes. I did like the contrast against the black canvas micarta. I don't think I'll do it again. Jake

HT Oven. Quick and Janky. A Plea for Help.

So in the new knife makers section I showed a blade I made out of O1. It was "heated treated" in my little two brick forge and tempered in a toaster oven. The Knife Dog LRB suggested I need to do more research on the heat treatment of O1. So taking the advice from LRB it seems I need to give O1...

    O1 Prototype. Quick and Dirty

O1 Prototype. Quick and Dirty Testing Results. LRB thanks. Your assumption is correct. I moved the blade in and out of the little two brick forge for a few minutes. This was after the steel became non-magnetic. I know, still unknown temperature. I have an old pottery kiln waiting to be...

    O1 Prototype. Quick and Dirty

The etch actually worked but since the blade still had grind marks in it wasn't as bold as I would have liked. The battery charger worked good. The heat treat and the handle are what I intend to evaluate. I'll try to post results next week. Thanks Jake

    O1 Prototype. Quick and Dirty

O1 Prototype. Evaluation The piece is 1/8" O1 heat treated to non magnetic and tempered for two one hour cycles at 375. This took the most time except waiting for the epoxy to cure. I probably spent 45 minutes grinding the bevels and it certainly shows. My grinder is a Craftsman 2X42 modified...
