2015 KD Members Choice Awards - KITCHEN KNIVES

Three great submissions in this category. My vote goes to Randy; that damascus is fantastic and I like the long sleek lines of the blade. As John noted, the knife shows an eye for combining materials in a way that really catches the eye. Erin

    KD Awards polls are open

I'm glad to see that these awards are still going strong in 2015. Some great stuff this year. Putting on my voting hat. :3: Erin

Third and Fourth completed, and a question about hiding pins

+1. A good taper pin reamer will help with this. Like you noted in the OP... it's best to avoid epoxy in the pin holes. A good tapered peen will usually hold things nicely. Erin

Aiel Fighter in Dark Desert Ironwood

Thanks guys. I glad y'all like it. Thanks man. However, maybe I'm tainted by the movies, but I wouldn't describe this knife as Elvish. :les: I appreciate your comments. Erin

Gidgee Mistake - Vest Bowie in Ringed Gidgee

Good morning folks. This is little vest Bowie that I recently finished up. The handle is a beautiful chatoyant piece of stabilized Ringed Gidgee. The W2 blade shows an active hamon in the forced patina... not an easy trick. During construction, this piece of steel fought me at every...

Aiel Fighter in Dark Desert Ironwood

Good morning folks. This knife has been finished for several months, but it took me this long to build a sheath and take photos. I'm calling it an Aiel Fighter, because my wife talked me into reading some fantasy books, and now I'm a big nerd. The milled/radiused one-piece bolster/frame...

    Dirk WIP w/ 1-piece Bolster/Frame

I know that I left this thread hanging for a while... but I finally got around to wrapping things up. Erin

What's going on in your shop?

Clean and classy John. Looking forward to seeing it completed. Erin

    flipping wet wheel

Not sure what your hand-cranked wet wheel looks like, but what you don't want to do is THIS. Over-speed on a wheel meant for low RPMs is no joke... as Sammer found out back in '09. Erin

    Tapmatic

Much like what others have mentioned... ... If we're talking titanium... When tapping 2-56 holes with my Tapmatic 30x, I drill 5/64" holes, then follow with a thread-forming tap lubed with Moly-Dee. Erin

What's going on in your shop?

 That's a good looking design Bryce. How's the rigidity when it's all locked down? Erin

    Dirk WIP w/ 1-piece Bolster/Frame

Photo 29 I measured the groove location from my sketch, and transferred the lines to the bolster (using my height gauge and surface plate). Photo 30 Then I file. I find that magnification is helpful for this. Photo 31 Here I've started to rough fit the scales to the...

    Dirk WIP w/ 1-piece Bolster/Frame

Let's keep this thing moving. Photo 22 Getting the tang-pocket to fit starts with milling (from the side), but ends with a bunch of hand filing. I have a decent fit here, but will need to sand the face of the bolster area to a clean finish so I can make sure the ricasso shoulders...

    Dirk WIP w/ 1-piece Bolster/Frame

Photo 11 I'm getting ready to start shaping the 1-piece bolster/frame. This will be one of the more complex milling projects that I've attempted for a knife, and it starts with measurements. Here I'm measuring the thickness of the bolster section ahead of the rounded scale transition...

    Dirk WIP w/ 1-piece Bolster/Frame

Back for round 2. :44: Photo 6 This knife will have more {mini} mill time associated with it than most of my non-folding knives. The first step is to get the rough material square. Starting with square material ensures, in turn, that fixturing for future operations will also be as square...

Walnut Khukri and some Photography Experimentation

Thanks for the comments guys. Haha... thanks. Honestly though, I wouldn't consider this to be trick photography. It's just a really cool way to get light where you want it without a cumbersome set-up. Maybe not an ultimate solution, but it's another tool in the toolbox... and I'll...

Walnut Khukri and some Photography Experimentation

Good morning y'all. I finished this knife up a couple weeks ago, but had been struggling to find time to take photos. Back in '04-'06, I was really into khukris, and spent a decent amount of time (and money) hanging around the Himalayan Imports sub-forum over on Bladeforums. In time, my...
