Here's what she posted last night.... Ted update 1/8 Still in ICU Early this morning we came in to check on Ted. They said he was slow coming off things and they were going to let him rest today . And there would be no visitors for the day. To let his body rest. That this might be a slow...

    AC vs DC motors

I'm the same. Had a Baldor 1hp on a VFD since day one and never feel like I need more. I have a 4" drive wheel and my speed range and torque are fine, never bogs down. I don't really use my grinder for throwing a 4 foot trail of high speed sparks hogging off tons of material, maybe that's the...

    G/Flex Expoxy Bond

I use Gflex and have done both sand blasted tangs and big grit scratch marks. My personal belief is the sandblasted texture is probably best. I've never had a glue failure on a customer knife so guess I have no real world results really. I have repaired a couple of other makers knives, I think...

    A potential order

I would be tempted to take it on. First thing, I would try to price myself out of the job upfront. Hit em high and ask for big down payment, see what they say. I know of a hunting club here in Arkansas that is very exclusive, doctors and lawyers and ceo's. They wouldn't blink at $500 knives. If...

    AC vs DC motors

Most DC motors use brushes, which wear out and will require maintenance. A lot of DC motors are ventilated too. A 3ph AC TEFC motor is about as maintenance free of an item as anything in your shop. DC motors don't seem as common or cheap as AC motors either.

    Tempering swing?

I put a big 1/2" thick piece of slate floor tile in my little oven. Once it's at setpoint and stable, the temp is very steady.

    Stainless Steel Recommendation

AEBL is a great steel and is at a reasonable price. It's my go to SS now. I've tried a couple others, but most cost a lot more and I really can't tell a huge difference. Some of the "super" steel flavors are tougher but you will also find they are tougher on you. Hand sanding is harder...

    Cutting Even Bevels

About everybody is on Facebook. Allen lives in Fayetteville I think. He does the "little craft show" in Fayetteville sometimes and teaches a class at Eureka Springs School of the Arts every now and then. I believe he might do one on one time at his home shop. Billy Helton has a website and is...

    Cutting Even Bevels

Do you know Allen Newberry? He's been doing some classes in Eureka Springs and seems like he might do one on one at his shop. Over in Claremore, OK Billy Helton does stock removal and forging classes. I took his forging class and it was awesome. Chris Taylor over in Gentry/Siloam Springs area...

    Cutting Even Bevels

I live in NW Arkansas and there are at least 3 makers in this general area that do classes. Where are you?

    Cutting G10

I found a local bandsaw blade maker here and was pleasantly surprised. He makes better blades and they are the same price or cheaper. I've got a big horizontal bandsaw and his blades were half the price of some of the online blade shops. Highly recommend looking up a local blade maker.

    EDC 1/8 or 3/16?

I've made both and ended up in the middle. I think 5/32 is just right. I've used 3/16 with a tapered tang and a distal taper blade, leaving only the ricasso thick and it's ok. The 1/8 makes for a very light blade which might be desirable for an EDC.

    Prayer request

I just had a big knee surgery 6 weeks ago, sucked, but on the mend now. Better talk to a good knee guy, losing ones mobility is a quick way to go downhill in my opinion. Good luck.

Yeah, I'm still here! My latest...

Thanks Ed. By the numbers I'm still a newbie at heart. I've probably made about 50 knives total, but I only serial # the ones I sell. This was #39 for me, working on #40 now. I've been practicing forging more lately, hope to get good enough for Journeyman test in a couple more years.

Yeah, not only the wood being special but I had a strict deadline to meet. It was presented at his retirement party and I was still putting an edge on it at midnight the night before!
