EDC 1/8 or 3/16?

I would like to design an EDC fixed blade. Is 1/8 more common due to the weight? What do you folks prefer? I don’t carry one because I work with children all day and I don’t want any of them to get the jump on me....again.

I've made both and ended up in the middle. I think 5/32 is just right. I've used 3/16 with a tapered tang and a distal taper blade, leaving only the ricasso thick and it's ok. The 1/8 makes for a very light blade which might be desirable for an EDC.

I need more to go on. :)

What defines an "EDC" fixed blade? Are we talking about a knife that will fill the same role as a folding knife or are we talking about a knife that will fit into a "belt knife" category that starts where the folder stops?

Defining the usage might help you decide.

My vote is for 1/8", or less.

Most of the EDC’s I have made were in the .125 (1/8) category. As luck would have it I am working on one now using about .140 Damascus so I will let you know...

I’m thinking a small knife in a belt sheath. I have to practice more on the 1/8 inch.

Any tips on the bevel process, let me know. I seem to be doing better with the 3/16 bevels but I have yet to complete a good edge on a 1/8. Doesn’t seem as forgiving.
