    First knife WIP

With my first few knives, I annealed the steels (2 prybars and 3 files by putting them in a large bed of coals in my shop woodburner stove. I also surrounded the steel with charcoal briquettes. Then I left them to 'cook' and cool for a day or more. I was surprised when only slight pressure in...

where I can find leather material to make a sheath?

You should check to see if they have a store in your area. Doing business with them online is good, and will get you what you need, but they usually have very helpful people in their store locations and even offer some free leatherworking classes in some locations.

    Do I?

Thanks for your input, Robert and Ed. I really appreciate, not only the knife-making instruction I get here from guys like you, but also (especially) the Christian fellowship here. I'm not sure about my progress either, but hey, any progress is better than no progress, right? And, I have to...

    Do I?

-was reading through Ephesians today. I really have no problem with Chapter 5: verses 22 through 24. In fact, I whole-heartedly agree! But, then I stubbed my toe on verses 25-on. Do I do that? :les: ...and what would that look like in my life?

    1 Peter 5:6-7

Rob- Thank you for your insights. I sometimes struggle accepting (and being thankful for) the limited time I seem to get to work on knives. It's hard when I see others growing so much in their skills, and I seem to be almost stagnant for long periods of time. Thanks for reminding me that we are...

Belt wobble and how to corect it.

So- is it just this batch of Norton belts that wobble? Maybe you got a batch with some defects. Your grinder looks pretty new, so- is this just how things started out with it from day one? I would try a straight edge along drive wheels and rollers. And, then check for play in the...

    So, Who's cross is it?

More than once I have been challenged, encouraged, or stretched by the spiritual discussions here. And, I thank you guys that make that possible. It's one of the reasons I favor this forum over any others I've come across. I apologize for not contributing more. And, I deserve the rebuke you...

    Test

Hovering over those opened the pics for me. But, I don't know how it would work for a non-forum member. Guess you could log out and then try it? What's left to complete that knife? I've never built a folder (yet). I imagine there's a lot of fine tuning involved.

Godly advise on reading the Bible

Thanks, Raymond- Good points there- I printed that list off and intend to read through it before my next time of devotion, Bill

The link on the page works, but we're just not getting a thumbnail on the page. BTW- looking good! Did you find the little button for "Insert Image"? It's the third from the right- above the box where you enter your text.

    Mirror finish

Thx, John, Walt, and Ed- I'm all ears! Guess I kind of lost track of this thread for awhile. What do you think, Ed? Maybe not a good candidate for Kydex (especially with a mirror finish)? I'm hoping that as I shape the scales, I can at least make the entry/exit a little better. I guess my goal...

    Grinding help needed plz!

ReCap from everyone's input: 1. Is your knife blank flat and true on all sides and edges? 2. Is your platen flat and true? 3. Is torgue the problem- I wouldn't think so, if you are doing all you grinding the same direction. 4. Are you using consistent pressure against the belt? 5. Could your...

    Mirror finish

I have a 'mirror-finish' related question. I am working on a tanto that is mirror finished (because that's what the new owner wants). He would also like a Kydex sheath, so that's what I'm planning. My question is: Will Kydex scratch up or mar a mirror finish (on 5061) more than leather would? I...

    Stencils?

You don't have an old automotive battery trickle-charger around, do you Walt? -like say a 10 amp? That's what I used after making a few changes to get both AC and DC current out of it. But, some of the newer ones have circuitry in them that won't allow current flow until hooked up to a battery...

    First time questions

I helped a young guy build his first knife this last year out of a flat-bar (by his choice). It seemed to come out pretty hard. After getting started, I could tell that my annealing process wasn't as effective as it had been in the past. After the annealing, we were having trouble even with...
