    Kimmi's Cutlery Photos

Here's a boning knife I finished in the last batch of knives. It's AEB-L with a koa handle, curly maple bolsters and green G-10 liners.

    Brisket Knife

I'm pretty sure it was Geoff Feder on the knife talk podcast that explained doing them this way. Draw the profile of your blade. Then mark out and drill a series of holes the size you want your scallops to be, centered on your edge line. Cut your blade out and then grind bevels and file the...

    No more blisters!

I am. I’ve practiced with the machine, but wasn’t confident enough to do it on the sheaths yet.

    No more blisters!

I cut a stitching groove in first, so it was pretty easy. Took about a minute to stitch.

    No more blisters!

Here are the first 2 sheaths off the machine. Pretty pleased with them. And way easier than hand stitching.

    ROCKROOSTER

I found the Meindl hiking boots at Cabela's 15 or 20 years ago and haven't looked at another boot since. They're not cheap, but I can wear them 12 - 16 hours a day, 7 days a week and they last me a good 2 years. I haven't even broken a shoe string on a pair yet. I think they are the Perfekt...

    No more blisters!

After hand sewing the last batch of sheaths, I decided enough was enough and ordered a Cowboy Outlaw hand operated sewing machine. It came in this week, so I made a quick bench for it and got it set up. I threw together a phone holster today. The machine worked great sewing through 5 layers...

What's going on in your shop?

Finished another batch tonight. 10 gut hooks with koa handles, 1 with walnut burl and a boning knife with maple burl for the handle. With all these sheaths, I'm pretty sure my next purchase will be a sewing machine.

    Block handles

I like blocks to be at least 1" thick, 1 3/4" - 2" wide, they can be narrower depending on handle shape. First thing I do is cut the front end of the block to then angle needed, then transfer the ricasso width and tang width to that end of the block. I also draw a center line on the block from...

    Finally finished a knife....

Dang, Ted! I'm blown away. That is absolutely stunning! And the best part is, as Dennis said, you are feeling better and able to work. I can see your order books filling up with these!

    super glue (cyanoacrylate) for handles.

I'll 3rd K&G. I just got 70 lbs of koa back from them and it was about a 5 week turnaround.

    5160 Help Needed

I haven't used 5160, but from what I understand, Parks 50 is too fast for it. Also, Parks 50 should be used at room temperature. 120 is the top limit for Parks 50.

How do I sand this scale flat?

I would sand whichever side will be against the tang. You may need to put more pressure to one end or the other to get it to flatten with as little waste as possible. I wouldn't worry about the other side until after I had it glued to the blade. One caution, when having to grind very much on a...

    Belt slides on platen

I noticed you said all wheels are crowned but one. If I remember correctly, I read somewhere that only one wheel should be crowned or it could cause problems with the tracking.

    Washer in hidden tang?

I agree with John. I use corby bolts for most handles. They have a 3/16” shank and 1/4” head, tightened against wood handles with no problems.
